The film’s subtitle “Folie a Deux” means “Madness of Two” in French. This initially led to speculation about Harley Quinn’s appearance in the film, which was later confirmed. The name Folie a Deux comes from 19th-century French psychiatrists Charles Lasègue and Jules Falret. The term was coined to refer to two or more people who share the same insanity or delusion. It is also known as Lasègue–Falret syndrome. The jury foreman mistakenly speaks of “the People of New York” instead of Gotham City. The director continues to make a sequel that is unfortunately empty and has no character development. Phillips outdid himself by directing a film that has excellent cinematography/visuals that portray every feeling and emotion he wants to tell and express. BUT, he failed to create an engaging storyline. From part one to part two, usually the characters in the film change. Their arc declines or inclines. Their personalities change. Events/obstacles come their way to change their lives. OR new character(s) enter their lives, which opens the door for more interesting events to come their way, resulting in a “Folie à Deux.” In this movie, Joker/Arthur Fleck’s life doesn’t seem to change much since Gaga’s character Lee is added. Instead, the movie keeps repeating its events by either REvisiting the past (the first Joker movie) or reacting to some of its scenes. It also keeps going back to the same locations and events within this movie itself. Resulting in an overall dull movie that is ONLY visually entertaining. This movie features two main characters within the world of Gotham, Harvey Dent, who is played terribly by Harry Lawtey and written even worse. By the end of the movie, I felt like he was useless and taken advantage of because of his “name” within the comic book fandom. The same goes for Lady Gaga’s Lee, who just didn’t seem to be in this movie. I liked how this movie uses music/songs to show that it is an ESCAPE to our inner selves. However, the song choices were off. On the other hand, their performances were well done by Gaga or the cinematography skills of Joaquin Phoenix and Lawrence Sher.
