Britain rarely allows filming inside the Foreign Office
Chronology
In the midst of an international crisis, career diplomat Kate Wyler lands a high-profile job that she doesn’t quite fit in with the geographical implications of her marriage and her political future. The producers of the American & British governments allowed them to use real-life locations as filming locations for the series, including the still-recent American Embassy (at Nine Elms), which opened in 2018. A tribute to any film or screen production, especially an American one.
Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger of gigantic proportions
One location that was unavailable was Winfield House, the real-life residence of the American ambassador. Although it is accurately described as occupying the largest residential plot of land in London (11 acres) other than Buckingham Palace, the producers used a country house outside the city for filming. Featured at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (2024) Oh my God!
I don’t know if my heart could take 3 seasons
I had a heart attack in the last few minutes of season 2. I initially thought this was going to be a very serious, slow-paced political drama. Maybe another kind of *feel-good* TV drama like Madam Secretary.
Boy, was I wrong
The Diplomat will have you on the edge of your seat in every episode. They are staring at you like a starving animal. This is political theater at its best.
It is more cut throat than my wildest dreams
And, even if it’s only 1/10th of what really happens in US politics and various institutions (CIA, Secret Service, Diplomacy) it’s still a wild ride. Keri Russell once again plays a strong female lead, which reminded me of "The Americans" She’s great!
