This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the hands and wrists of fishermen working as oyster shuckers, and to identify the risk factors associated with oyster shucking.
A total of 590 fishery workers including those working as oyster shuckers in 2015-2017 were included in the study analysis. Hand osteoarthritis (OA), carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and ulnar impaction syndrome were diagnosed using X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, and physical examinations according to each diagnostic criterion. The Rapid Entire Body Assessment was used as a measurement tool for analyzing the occupation-related burden factors.
The prevalence of hand OA, CTS, and ulnar impaction syndrome was higher in oyster shuckers than in aquaculture/offshore fishery workers. The prevalence of upper limb disease was higher in oyster shuckers than in other fishery workers, even in the prevalence of exposure to occupational burden factors. In oyster shuckers, the incidence of hand and wrist OA was 84%, that of CTS was 72%, and that of ulnar impaction syndrome was 41%. In addition, oyster shuckers were more likely to be exposed to occupational burden factors than were other types of fishermen.
The prevalence of hand OA, CTS, and ulnar impaction syndrome was higher in oyster shuckers. Therefore, proper stretching or exercises for rest and musculoskeletal relaxation, along with health-care education and promotion, will be needed for the fishermen’s repeated posture and impact work.

The severity of malaria infection has often been associated to exuberant host immune inflammatory responses that could possibly lead to severe immunopathological conditions and subsequent death of host tissues. Activin A is a protein belonging to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) family that regulates multiple physiological processes and pathological-associated diseases. The biological roles of activin A have been associated with manipulation of inflammation-related processes and modulation of host immune responses. This implies that activin A protein could play a role in malaria pathogenesis since malaria infection has been closely linked to severe immune responses leading to death, However, the actual in vivo role of activin A in malaria infection remains elusive. Hence, this study was undertaken to investigate the involvement of activin A in malaria infection as pleen) in malarial mice. Neutralization of activin A production via recombinant mouse activin RIIA Fc chimera (rmActivin RIIA Fc chimera) had significantly reduced the parasitemia levels in malarial mice. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the precise mechanism of immune modulation mediated by activin A and its associated immune-modulation mediators in regulating the inflammatory responses elicited during the course of malaria infection.Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis caused by Vibrio cholerae non-O1/ non-O139 is a rare phenomenon. V. cholerae is known as a common aetiology of epidemic diarrheal disease and rarely causes extra-gastrointestinal infections. In this report, a 52-year-old man presented to our hospital with a clinical scenario for chronic liver cirrhosis with low grade fever and loose stools. V. cholerae was isolated from peritoneal fluid culture, which was further confirmed as non-O1/ non-O139 strain by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. The patient was successfully treated with antimicrobial therapy and peritoneal drainage. This case represents the first isolation of V. cholerae non-O1/ non-O139 strain from peritoneal fluid.
