The authors of this study aimed to determine the effect of reflexology on labor outcomes in primiparous pregnant women. A total of 60 women participated in the study in 2 groups of 30 for reflexology and control groups. During the first stage of labor, the reflexology technique was applied to reflex regions of each foot. VAS mean scores and State Anxiety Inventory mean scores of the experimental group were found to be statistically significantly lower than the control group. Reflexology was effective in decreasing pain and anxiety and increasing the birth satisfaction during the first stage of labor.Skeletal muscles produce secretory factors termed as myokines, which alter physiological functions of target tissues. We recently identified C-X-C chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) as a novel myokine, which is downregulated in response to exercise. In the present study, we investigated whether the nutritional changes affect CXCL10 expression in mouse skeletal muscle. Expression of CXCL10 was evaluated in mice fed a normal diet or a high fat diet for 10 weeks. In animals fed on HFD, Cxcl10 expression was significantly induced in fast-twitched muscles, and was accompanied by increased blood glucose and free fatty acid levels. In vitro experiments using C2C12 myotubes suggested that the increased levels of glucose and palmitic acids directly enhanced CXCL10 expression. Interestingly, the effect of palmitic acids was attenuated by palmitoleic acids. The COVID-19 epidemic has resulted in a massive surge in the need for intensive care unit (ICU) care. To avoid being overwhelmed, hospitals had to adapt and support the ICU teams in structured ICU care including involving surgical teams. This work aims at describing the collaborative efforts between the ICU care team and the Surgical Task Force (STF) during a surge of ICU activity in a University Hospital in a French high-density COVID-19 cluster. Study Design. This retrospective single center study analyzed the STF workflow and the ICU population. The study included 55 patients hospitalized in our ICU, ICU-converted step-down units, and post-anesthesia care units. The primary measure was the global daily STF activity. The secondary measure was the daily activity for each of the 5 tasks accomplished by the STF. Results. The STF attempted 415 phone calls for 55 patients’ families, 237 mobilizations of patients requiring prone positions, follow-up of 20 patients requiring medevac, and contribution to ethical discussion for 2 patients. The mean (SD) daily number of successful phones calls, ethical discussions, mobilizations of patients requiring prone positions and medevac follow-up were 18 (7), .1 (.4), 10 (7), and 2 (3), respectively. No actions for discharge summaries writing were required. The maximum number of daily mobilizations for patients requiring prone positions was 25. The maximum number of daily attempted phone calls and successful phone calls were 37 and 26, respectively. Conclusion. Surgeons’ technical and nontechnical skills represented an effective support for ICU teams during the COVID-19 pandemic.Fibronectin (FN) circulating in the blood and produced by cells provides the basis of the extracellular matrix (ECM) formed in healing acute wounds. The time-dependent deposition of FN by macrophages, its synthesis by fibroblasts and myofibroblasts, and later degradation in the remodeled granulation tissue are a prerequisite for successful healing of wounds. However, the pattern of FN expression and deposition in skin lesions is disturbed. The degradation of the ECM components including FN in varicose veins prevails over ECM synthesis and deposition. FN is inconspicuous in the fibrotic lesions in lipodermatosclerosis, while tenascin-C containing FN-like peptide sequences are prominent. FN is produced in large amounts by fibroblasts at the edge of venous ulcers but FN deposition at the wound bed is impaired. Both the proteolytic environment in the wounds and the changed function of the ulcer fibroblasts may be responsible for the poor healing of venous ulcers. The aim of this review is to describe the current knowledge of FN pathophysiology in chronic venous diseases.
