Antarctic krill protein (AKP) was extracted from Antarctic krill by an alkali dissolution-isoelectric precipitation method and then it was phosphorylated with sodium tripolyphosphate. The phosphorylated Antarctic krill protein (P-AKP) powder was obtained by spray-drying (SD), freeze-drying (FD), and hot-air drying (AD), and the effects of these drying methods on the structures and functional properties of proteins were investigated. The P-AKP powder dried by SD had the best sensory performance, and its particle size was much smaller than that of FD and AD. Scanning electron microscope displayed a uniform particle size of SD powder and the particles were uniformly dispersed. X-ray diffraction analysis showed a higher crystallinity of SD sample than AD and FD. Differential scanning calorimeter analysis revealed that SD sample had the best thermal stability and less protein denaturation (ΔH = 210.80 J/g), followed by FD (ΔH = 80.48 J/g) and AD (ΔH = 73.94 J/g; P less then 0.05). Fourier transform infrared shows production of P-AKP powders with better functionalities. This research can provide theoretical guidance for the further processing and utilization of P-AKP, and offer technical reference for food processing and preservation.There have been ongoing debates as to how, or even whether, we should clinically classify gender diversity in children through clinical classification manuals. So-called ‘depathologizing’ is argued as being vital to address the stigma that these children are somehow disordered or sick. Yet one argument in favour of continued clinical classification for transgender and gender non-conforming children is that it better facilitates access to specialist psychological support. I argue that whilst continued clinical classification offers a seemingly pragmatic solution to ensuring access, it does in fact obscure our understanding of the individual needs of these children. In this paper I address fundamental issues that aim to better our understanding of need and thus why a child may benefit from specialist support. I do so by critiquing a paper I nearly wrote, which argued for the ongoing continued classification of gender incongruence in children. MCC950 Ultimately, I argue that specialist psychological support and care should be driven by the needs of the individual child, as determined by the child and those involved with their care. By bettering our understanding as to why specialist psychological support may be beneficial for some, we move past the focus of such specialist support being provided because of the child’s gender diversity. Methodologically the paper may be unusual, in comparison to traditional normative counter-argumentative bioethical position papers, but by presenting an argument for depathologization of gender diversity of children in this way there is also an alternative insight into the methods of bioethics.Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) vertical transmission is an open issue. Insufficient evidence is available regarding passive immunity in neonates born from SARS-CoV-2 infected women. We report a case of a neonate showing the presence of blood specific IgG and the absence of IgM and negative nasopharyngeal swab. He was born from an asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2-infected mother with positive IgG and IgM. The transplacental passage of specific IgG antibodies from the affected mother to the unaffected fetus highlights neonatal passive immunity.Tomato is an important source of health-promoting constituents, and researchers have focused on enhancing the content. In the present study, the influence of net-house (NH) and open-field (OF) growing conditions on physicochemical traits of tomatoes from eight different cultivars were evaluated. The tomato fruit qualities, such as color, total soluble solids (TSS), total acidity (TA), and pH were measured. Furthermore, ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/ESI-HR-QTOFMS) was used for identification and quantification of health-promoting compounds such as ascorbic acid, ß-carotene, lycopene, and its isomers. In addition, in vitro bile acid binding capacity of all tomato samples was analyzed along with soluble and insoluble dietary fiber analysis as biofunctional properties. The results suggest that production systems influenced tomato fruit quality and biofunctional characteristics in a variety-specific manner. Notably, TA and all-trans-ß-carotene values were considerably influenced by production systems, and their levels were higher in the NH- and OF-grown tomatoes, respectively. Our findings underline the importance of the rational choice of genotype and production system to obtain high-quality tomatoes with enhanced desired traits for breeders and consumers. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Tomato is one of the nutritional high-valued horticultural crops. The present study aimed to assess the impact of production systems, such as net-house and open-field conditions, on physicochemical traits and biofunctional properties, in vitro bile acid binding capacity of eight tomato varieties. This study supplies a good reference for the rational selection of genotype and production system to obtain high-quality tomatoes with improved desired traits for breeders and consumers.The anticancer activity of novel thiazolidine-2,4-diones was evaluated against HepG2, HCT-116, and MCF-7 cells. MCF-7 was the most sensitive cell line to the cytotoxicity of the new derivatives. In particular, compounds 18, 12, 17, and 16 were found to be the most potent derivatives over all the tested compounds against the cancer cell lines HepG2, HCT116, and MCF-7, with IC50 = 9.16 ± 0.9, 8.98 ± 0.7, 5.49 ± 0.5 µM; 9.19 ± 0.5, 8.40 ± 0.7, 6.10 ± 0.4 µM; 10.78 ± 1.2, 8.87 ± 1.5, 7.08 ± 1.6 µM; and 10.87 ± 0.8, 9.05 ± 0.7, 7.32 ± 0.4 µM, respectively. Compounds 18 and 12 have nearly the same activities as sorafenib (IC50 = 9.18 ± 0.6, 5.47 ± 0.3, and 7.26 ± 0.3 µM, respectively), against HepG2 cells, but slightly lower activity against HCT116 cells and slightly higher activity against the MCF-7 cancer cell line. Also, these compounds displayed lower activities than doxorubicin against HepG2 and HCT-116 cells but higher activity against MCF-7 cells (IC50 = 7.94 ± 0.6, 8.07 ± 0.8, and 6.75 ± 0.4 µM, respectively).
