Severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19, and consequent social distancing directives have been observed to negatively impact social relationships but the impact of these changes on the quality of social relationships at a population level has not been explored.
To evaluate changes in social relationships in a U.S. population sample during a time of social distancing.
We deployed a matched, longitudinal survey design of the National Institutes of Health Adult Social Relationship Scales to assess the social aspects of emotional support, instrumental support, friendship, loneliness, perceived hostility, and perceived rejection from a time without social distancing (February 2018) to a time where social distancing directives were active (May 2020). Changes in social relationships were compared using paired t-tests, and generalized linear regression models were constructed to identify subpopulations experiencing differential changes in each subdomain of sons may be needed to mitigate the potential adverse impact of social distancing on social relationships.
Research has documented a robust mental health advantage among Asian and Latino immigrants to the United States relative to the native-born. The current investigation extended this line of research, asking whether Middle Eastern immigrants to the United States enjoy a similar mental health advantage.
Drawing on pooled cross-sections from the 2007-2018 National Health Interview Surveys, we used OLS regression to examine psychological distress in Middle Eastern immigrants relative to both native-born Whites and immigrants from other global regions. We used statistical interactions to assess whether gender and period differences are contingent on region of birth.
Findings reveal that the average level of psychological distress is higher among Middle Eastern immigrants than among both U.S.-born Whites and immigrants from other regions. Despite changing circumstances of migration for Middle Easterners and implementation in the United States of anti-immigrant policies, we see no evidence that distress increased more among immigrants compared to native-born Whites. Results point to greater psychological distress among Middle Eastern women than their native-born White counterparts and women from other immigrant groups, as well as Middle Eastern men. In contrast, psychological distress levels for Middle Eastern and native-born White men were indistinguishable, suggesting that the Middle Eastern mental health disadvantage in the United States is borne solely by women.
Results show that the mental health advantage enjoyed by some immigrant groups does not extend to Middle Eastern women, contradicting the healthy migrant model and challenging the assumption of a uniform mental health advantage across immigrant groups.

Shell shape pattern in adults of the marine gastropod Buccinanops deformis was proved to be correlated with imposex incidence and maritime traffic in populations of Patagonia. We explore through GM the shell shape variation of B. deformis intracapsular embryos in pre-hatching stages of development, in two populations with contrasting maritime traffic and imposex incidence. Embryonic shell shape from polluted and unpolluted areas was significantly different in apex, lateral, aperture and siphonal channel. The same shell shape pattern was observed previously in B. deformis adult specimens. Coelenterazine Our results demonstrate that the embryonic shell shape is an early biomarker that could be used as a tool to detect the response to environmental pollution studying abundant egg capsules laid in the field but protecting reproductive adults. The aim of the present work is to develop a laboratory-scaled methodology for an on-demand supply of semen from the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Firstly, sea urchin specimens were acclimatized to the long-term rearing in a recirculating aquaculture system and gonad maturation was obtained under controlled conditions. Semen samples were then collected from mature sea urchins and cryopreserved. Finally, post-thawing motility was evaluated, to verify whether the cryopreserved semen had maintained enough viability to be used in laboratory activities. The post-thawing motility parameters remained quite unchanged for up to 60 min after activation; moreover, the semen even retained the ability of motility activation for 60 min after thawing. This motility pattern makes the use of cryopreserved semen a feasible option in spermiotoxicity bioassays. The preliminary ecotoxicity test, carried out using motility parameters as endpoints, showed sensitivity levels to cadmium falling in the same order of magnitude as those recorded for fresh sea urchin semen and for cryopreserved sea bream semen. . Therefore, semen samples produced and stored according to the developed methodology described in this paper, can be considered a promising and sustainable alternative to those collected from mature sea urchins harvested in the field.
Using data from an extended follow-up of a randomized trial of mailed nicotine patches, the current secondary analysis explores the continued level of interest in nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) as a means to promote tobacco cessation and whether the purchase of additional NRT was related to tobacco cessation.
Attempts were made to re-contact participants (N=999) from a randomized trial of mailed nicotine patches to take part in a five-year follow-up. Those contacted were asked about their current smoking status, interest in free-of-charge NRT, and purchase of other NRT in the time since the 6-month follow-up.
A total of 518 participants were successfully interviewed at the five-year time point. While 43.6% of these participants purchased additional NRT, this purchase was unrelated to success at tobacco cessation or to initial group randomization (received/did not received nicotine patches at baseline). Current smokers reported continued interest in receiving free-of charge NRT (77.2% were interested).
