Sugarcane yeast and brewer’s yeast from ethanol production are widely used as ingredients of animal feed formulations in Brazil. To avoid the contamination of the must in ethanol production refineries, the use of antibiotics is one of the main preventive treatments. Thus, there is a risk of antibiotic residues carry over from yeast to animal feed. This unintentional addition of antibiotics can produce non-compliant feed products, due to regulatory aspects and their toxicity for animals. The results of an exploratory program to assess the occurrence of over 60 antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals in 27 sugarcane yeast and brewer’s yeast samples were described. Monensin was present in seven samples with concentrations ranging from 0.47 to 263.5 mg kg-1. Other antibiotics quantitated were virginiamycin (2.25 mg kg-1) and amprolium (0.25 mg kg-1). Monensin in sugarcane yeast may represent a risk for further feeds production, especially for those products intended for sensible species such as equines and rabbits, for which monensin has toxic effects. The relationship of various benthic metrics to physical habitat metrics, pyrethroids, metals and sediment parameters was evaluated for a 10 year data set in Pleasant Grove Creek (Roseville, California) using univariate linear models, stepwise multiple regressions, and canonical correlation analysis. In general, total physical habitat scores in this residential stream were considered to be marginal to suboptimal. The most dominant benthic taxa were generally considered to be tolerant of environmental stressors and the benthic communities were rated as impaired based on a benthic index. Potentially toxic sediment concentrations of cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel and zinc were reported at various sites based on a comparison with existing threshold effect levels. The sum of pyrethroid Toxics Units (TUs) indicated that 10 of 21 sites based on a sensitive Hyalella laboratory toxicity test had TUs greater than one thus suggesting toxicity at various sites. In summary, the effects of the physical habitat, as reflected by certain habitat metrics that were indicative of stream-flow, hydrology, habitat diversity, and substrate quality overshadowed any apparent effects of pyrethroids and metals on shaping resident benthic communities when all environmental variables were considered in multivariate analyses.

Potentially life-threatening diagnosis of non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) can only be confirmed with electroencephalography (EEG). When access to EEG is limited, physicians may empirically treat, risking unnecessary sedation and intubation, or not treat, increasing risk of refractory seizures. Either may prolong hospital length of stay (LOS). The current study aimed to examine the effect of a new EEG system (Ceribell Rapid Response EEG, Rapid-EEG) on hospital costs by enabling easy access to EEG and expedited seizure diagnosis and treatment.

We built a two-armed decision-analytic cost-benefit model comparing Rapid-EEG with clinical suspicion alone for NCSE. Diagnostic parameters were informed by a multicenter clinical trial (DECIDE, NCT03534258), while LOS and cost parameters were from public US inpatient data, published literature, and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services fee schedules. We calculated reference case estimates from mean values, while uncertainty was assessed using 95% predict. The aim of this study is to understand the spatial and seasonal variations of persistent herbicides metabolites and to determine their origins in the Vilaine River watershed, Britany-France. Improving knowledge on herbicides metabolites sources and seasonality is important for drinking water resource management. Data were collected at 13 sampling stations during five sampling campaigns in 2016 and 2017. Relations between water quality parameters, herbicides and metabolites were analyzed using statistical methods. The influence of land use and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) on streams water quality has been identified. Cluster Analysis revealed that two groups of sampling stations can be described as “urban” with stations downstream the urban area and as “agricultural” with stations located downstream of the watershed. selleck Chloroacetamids metabolites have been associated together with nitrates and agricultural areas as could be expected. Thus, the drinking water treatment plant located in the estuary of the Vilaine River is exposed to high metolachlor ESA and nitrate loads all year long. Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is associated to anthropogenic urban contamination and nutrient loads. AMPA has its major sources in both glyphosate and phosphonate detergents issued from WWTP. This can help to adapt surface water treatment process and water management policies concerning herbicides metabolites.Malathion (MT) is one of the most widely used organophosphorus insecticides which induces toxicity through oxidative stress induction, free radical production and acetylcholinesterase inhibition. In this work, HepG2 cells were used to determine the effect of Zataria multiflora methanolic extract (MEZM) and rosmarinic acid (RA) on MT-induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were determined and plant was further standardized based on RA content using HPLC method. The cultured HepG2 cells were pretreated with MEZM (1 μg/ml) and RA (0.1 μg/ml) for 4 h and exposed to MT (100 μM). Cell viability, oxidative stress biomarkers, ROS production, and cell death were examined after 24 h. The amount of RA was determined 73.48 mg/g dried extract. IC50 values of MEZM and MT were 368.56 μg/ml and 99.43 μM, respectively. Pretreatment with MEZM and RA decreased the cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and cell percentage in the late apoptosis and necrosis stages induced by MT. There was no significant difference between MEZM and RA effects. The present study showed the significant protective effects of MEZM against toxicity induced by MT in hepatocytes which can be attributed to the plant antioxidant constituents including RA.
