The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of contact characteristics on HIE during player versus player contact scenarios in youth football. Head impact data and time-synchronized video were collected from 4 youth football games over 2 seasons in which opposing teams were instrumented with the Head Impact Telemetry (HIT) System. Coded contact characteristics included the player’s role in the contact, player speed and body position, contact height, type, and direction, and head contact surface. Head accelerations were compared among the contact characteristics using mixed-effects models. Among 72 instrumented athletes, 446 contact scenarios (n = 557 impacts) with visible opposing instrumented players were identified. When at least one player had a recorded impact, players who were struck tended to have higher rotational acceleration than players in striking positions. When both players had a recorded impact, lighter players and taller players experienced higher mean head accelerations compared with heavier players and shorter players. Understanding the factors influencing HIE during contact events in football may help inform methods to reduce head injury risk.

    Despite decreasing prevalence over the last several decades, cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease, underscoring the need for innovative, effective solutions. Pivot is a novel, inclusive smoking cessation program designed for smokers along the entire spectrum of readiness to quit. Pivot leverages proven methods and technological advancements, including a personal portable breath carbon monoxide sensor, smartphone app, and in-app text-based coaching. We previously reported outcomes from the end of active Pivot program participation in 319 adult smokers. Herein, we report longer-term follow up in this cohort.

    The aim of this study was to assess and report participant outcomes 3 months after completion of Pivot, including smoking behavior, quit rates, continuous abstinence rates and durability, and predictors of abstinence.

    This prospective remote cohort study included US-based cigarette smokers aged 18 to 65 years who smoked ≥5 cigarettes per day (CPD). Three months p outcomes were stable or improved when compared to previous outcomes from the end of the program. These findings validate earlier results, and suggest that Pivot is an effective and durable solution for smoking cessation.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted psychological health. Mindfulness training may also be relevant to the mitigation of harmful health consequences during acute crises. However, certain restrictions may necessitate the web-based delivery of mindfulness training (ie, rather than in-person group training settings).

    The objective of our study was to examine the effects of mindfulness interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic and to evaluate the effectiveness of web-based interventions.

    Data from an ongoing study were used for this retrospective equivalence analysis. Recruited participants were enrollees from mindfulness courses at a local charity organization that promoted mental wellness. This study had no exclusion criteria. We created three groups; two groups received their training during the COVID-19 pandemic (in-person training go received training during the pandemic. Course attendance was high and equivalent across the videoconferencing and comparison groups (P=.02), and participants in the videoconferencing group engaged in marginally more daily practice than the in-person training group.

    The aim of the study was to estimate the gout burden and risk factors in China from 1990 to 2017.

    The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study uses various analytical tools and a diverse set of data sources to generate comparable estimates of deaths and mortality rates broken down by age, sex, cause, year, and geography.

    We used the results from the GBD Study 2017 to compare disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), prevalence, incidence, and risk factors of gout in China. The median of the percentage change and 95% uncertainty intervals were determined for the period between 1990 and 2017.

    The age-standardized DALY rate, prevalence, and incidence increased 6.92%, 6.88%, and 6.16%, respectively, in China from 1990 to 2017. Although the rates of gout both globally and in China were increasing, the range of change for males in China was larger than that of the global level. All risk factors combined accounted for 30.04% of gout DALYs in 2017. The leading risk factors for gout DALYs were high body mass index and impaired kidney function, and the proportion of high body mass index increased significantly from 10.67% to 24.31%, whereas the proportion of impaired kidney function remained basically unchanged.

    The age-standardized DALY rate, prevalence, and incidence in China have increased progressively since 1990. Increasing attention on body weight management should be prioritized for controlling the rising prevalence of gout in the young and middle-aged population.
