To address this question, we evaluate two hypotheses (1) tendons stretch during red-muscle-actuated swimming and (2) tendons comprise the primary load transmission pathway from the red muscle to the spine. To evaluate these hypotheses, we measured the mechanical properties of the posterior oblique tendons and performed novel dissections to estimate the peak force that the red muscle can generate. The force-generating capacity of the red muscle is calculated to be much greater than the load-bearing capacity of the posterior oblique tendons. Thus, the long tendons likely stretch under force from the red muscle, but they are not strong enough to be the primary force transmission pathway. These results suggest that other pathways, such as serial load transmission through the red muscle myomeres to the great lateral tendon and/or the anterior oblique tendons to the skin, transmit appreciable force to the tail.Tropical ectotherms are generally believed to be more vulnerable to global heating than temperate species. Currently, however, we have insufficient knowledge of the thermoregulatory physiology of equatorial tropical mammals, particularly of small diurnal mammals, to enable similar predictions. In this study, we measured the resting metabolic rates (via oxygen consumption) of wild-caught lesser treeshrews (Tupaia minor, order Scandentia) over a range of ambient temperatures. We predicted that, similar to other treeshrews, T. minor would exhibit more flexibility in body temperature regulation and a wider thermoneutral zone compared with other small mammals because these thermoregulatory traits provide both energy and water savings at high ambient temperatures. Basal metabolic rate was on average 1.03±0.10 mL O2 h-1 g-1, which is within the range predicted for a 65-g mammal. We calculated the lower critical temperature of the thermoneutral zone at 31.0°C (95% confidence interval 29.3°-32.7°C), but using metabolic rates alone, we could not determine the upper critical temperature at ambient temperatures as high as 36°C. The thermoregulatory characteristics of lesser treeshrews provide a means of saving energy and water at temperatures well in excess of their current environmental temperatures. Our research highlights the knowledge gaps in our understanding of the energetics of mammals living in high-temperature environments, specifically in the equatorial tropics, and questions the purported lack of variance in the upper critical temperatures of the thermoneutral zone in mammals, emphasizing the importance of further research in the tropics.This strain of coronavirus is a new one and scientists do not yet know all there is to know about it. In this study, we compared psychology majors with nonpsychology majors on the basis of demographic, degree planning, academic preparedness, and academic performance variables using a unique longitudinal sample of nearly a million college students at 249 colleges and universities. Guided by prior research, we examined which students would persist in psychology, enter psychology from another major, or leave psychology for another major between three points in time intended major before entering college, second-year college major, and fourth-year college major. Critically, most students who majored in psychology did not initially express interest in the field, but entering and persisting in the field was strongly associated with high school exposure and performance in psychology. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential effect of hysteroscopic septum resection (HSR) on preterm delivery (PTD) in primary infertile women who had singleton pregnancies.Material and methods We analyzed 420 singleton pregnancies after primary infertility treatment and compared the PTD rates in women who underwent previous HSR (cases) and women who did not undergo previous operative hysteroscopy or cervical dilation (controls), regardless of the modality of conception (spontaneous or by in vitro fertilization).Results We did not find significant differences between cases and controls for the incidence of overall PTD rate (p = .237), PTD before 32 gestational weeks (p = .848), and between 32 and 37 gestational weeks (p = .324), premature rupture of membranes (p = .419), and neonatal birth weight (p = .129). Overall, the risk of spontaneous PTD less then 37 gestational weeks after HSR was not found to be significantly higher compared to controls (RR 1.29, 0.61-2.73 95% CI; p = .561).Conclusion According to our results, previous HSR could be not considered a risk factor for PTD in singleton pregnancies, regardless of the modality of conception (spontaneous or by in vitro fertilization).Introduction There are several reports on the use of the over-the-scope clip (OTSC) for gastrointestinal bleeding/fistula and endoscopic iatrogenic perforation. However, there are almost no reports on OTSC use for anastomotic leakage (AL) after colorectal cancer surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of AL closure using the OTSC.Material and methods Five patients who had undergone AL after laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer from April 2017 to April 2019 were evaluated.Results The average distance from the anal verge of the anastomosis site was 12 (5-18) cm. The average diameter of the dehiscent part was 10.9 (9.3-14.4) mm. The average number of OTSC days after the occurrence of AL was 11 (5-22). On the contrast examination immediately after OTSC, all cases were completely closed, but in the later contrast examination, only one case remained completely closed. The average incompletely closed diameter was 3.6 (2.9-5.1) mm, and the diameter of the dehiscent part was reduced in all cases.
