    Biofouling of man-made surfaces by marine organisms is a global problem with both financial and environmental consequences. However, the development of non-toxic anti-biofouling coatings is challenged by the diversity of fouling organisms. One possible solution leverages coatings composed of diverse chemical constituents. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) photopolymerization was used to modify poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMSe) surfaces with polymeric grafts composed of three successive combinations of acrylamide, acrylic acid, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate. RAFT limited conflicting variables and allowed for the effect of graft chemistry to be isolated. While all compositions enhanced the anti-biofouling performance compared with the PDMSe control, the ternary, amphiphilic copolymer was the most effective with 98% inhibition of the attachment of zoospores of the green alga Ulva linza, 94% removal of cells of the diatom Navicula incerta, and 62% removal of cells of the bacterium Cellulophaga lytica. However, none of the graft compositions tested were able to mitigate reattachment of adult barnacles, Amphibalanus amphitrite.Sedum plumbizincicola (S. plumbizincicola) is known as a sufficient plant for phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd) polluted soils. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), tea saponin (TS), and citric acid (CA) on Cd uptake and translocation by S. plumbizincicola. To do so, using a pot experiment, we set four concentration levels of activators (1, 3, 5, and 10 mmol L-1) and a control (CK). Results showed that none of the applied activators had significant impact on soil pH. Except for CA-10, the concentration of available Cd in Cd polluted soils increased by 65.8-72.9% compared with CK. The EDTA-1, CA-1, and TS-5 treatments caused significant increases of 52.3, 67.2, and 38.4%, respectively, in the biomass of aerial parts of S. plumbizincicola (p  less then  0.05) compared with CK. Except for CA-3, activators increased Cd accumulation in the aerial parts of plants by 47-124% compared with CK. Of all activators, EDTA-3 caused the highest Cd accumulation of 6.64 g poted soil in Anhui Province, East China. Our results indicated the effectiveness of these activators to increase soil available Cd, as well as improving the biomass of S. plumbizincicola and its Cd uptake. We believe that this study provides an efficient approach to increase the uptake of Cd by S. plumbizincicola, restoring Cd contaminated soils. Nevertheless, excessive activators may have adverse effects on soil aggregates and soil microorganisms. Therefore, it is necessary to control the amount of chelating agents and subsequently the deterioration of soil quality.This article describes the first case of successful nerve grafting for posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy secondary to radiocapitellar joint entrapment 2 years following closed reduction (CR) of a pediatric Monteggia fracture-dislocation (MFD). Patient notes were examined. The literature was reviewed to determine whether similar cases or techniques had been reported. A 5-year-old girl presented with a PIN palsy 2 years following CR of an MFD, demonstrating Medical Research Council (MRC) grade 4 wrist and MRC grade 2 finger and thumb extension. Nerve exploration at 27 months revealed a PIN crushed in the radiocapitellar joint with a proximal neuroma-in-continuity and no response to electrical stimulation. Neurolysis and lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve cable grafting were performed. The decision to pursue nerve grafting was based on the intraoperative appearance of an atrophic PIN with no response to stimulation, but with minimal muscle atrophy, short distance to target muscles, and pediatric patient with extended reinnervation timeline. Full recovery (MRC grade 5 wrist extension and MRC grade 4+ finger and thumb extension) was achieved at 1-year follow-up. Intercropping of hyperaccumulators with main crop is typically applied for remediation of As-contaminated soil. Most hyperaccumulators are wild plants with small biomass and slow growth rates. Thus, remediation is slow. Here, we propose an effective intercropping system for remediation of As-contaminated paddy soil. Four treatments-intercropping with water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk) (T1), water celery (Oenanthe javanica (Blume) DC.) (T2), or Guangdong white arrowhead (Sagittaria sagittifolia L. var) (T3), with rice (Oryza sativa L.) monoculture (control, CK)-were used. Compared with the CK, grain yield per plant of rice under T1 and T2 increased by 58.13% and 10.48%, respectively, but decreased by 46.90% in T3. As concentration, bioaccumulation factor, and translocation factor in brown rice were significantly lower in the intercropping treatments than in CK. As removal by water spinach was 7.04 and 1.47 times that by water celery and arrowhead, respectively.
