This has promoted the use of biofilms as an alternative to overcome the limitations of traditional planktonic systems. In this paper, the benefits and challenges of biofilm fermentations are reviewed with a focus on the production of low-value bulk chemicals and fuels from waste biomass. Our study demonstrates that biofilm fermentations can potentially improve productivities and product yields by increasing biomass retention and allowing for continuous operation at high dilution rates. Furthermore, we show that biofilms can tolerate hazardous environments, which improve the conversion of crude biomass under substrate and product inhibitory conditions. Additionally, we present examples for the improved conversion of pure and crude substrates into bulk chemicals by mixed microbial biofilms, which can benefit from microenvironments in biofilms for synergistic multi-species reactions, and improved resistance to contaminants. Finally, we suggest the use of mathematical models as useful tools to supplement experimental insights related to the effects of physico-chemical and biological phenomena on the process. Major challenges for biofilm fermentations arise from inconsistent fermentation performance, slow reactor start-up, biofilm carrier costs and carrier clogging, insufficient biofilm monitoring and process control, challenges in reactor sterilization and scale-up, and issues in recovering dilute products. The key to a successful commercialization of the technology is likely going to be an interdisciplinary approach. Crucial research areas might include genetic engineering combined with the development of specialized biofilm reactors, biofilm carrier development, in-situ biofilm monitoring, model-based process control, mixed microbial biofilm technology, development of suitable biofilm reactor scale-up criteria, and in-situ product recovery.

    The purpose of this study is to describe predictors of total hip replacement (THR) in community dwelling older adults. A better understanding of predictors of THR can aid in triaging patients and researching preventative strategies.

    At baseline, participants had assessment of radiographic OA and cam morphology (from pelvic radiographs), shape mode scores and hip bone mineral density (BMD; from dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)). After 2.6 and 5 years, participants reported hip pain using WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index), and had hip structural changes assessed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Risk of THR was analysed using mixed-effect Poisson regression.

    Incidence of THR for OA over 14 years was 4.6% (37/801). As expected, WOMAC hip pain and hip radiographic OA both predicted risk of THR. Additionally, shape mode 2 score (decreasing acetabular coverage) (RR 1.83/SD; 95% CI 1.1-3.04), shape mode 4 score (non-spherical femoral head) (RR 0.59/SD; 95% CI 0.36-0.96), cam morphology (α>60°) (RR 2.2/SD; 95% CI 1.33-3.36), neck of femur BMD (RR 2.09/SD, 95% CI 1.48-2.94) and bone marrow lesions (BMLs) increased risk of THR (RR 7.10/unit; 95% CI 1.09-46.29).

Despite this, the neural bases of counting sequences remain unstudied. We hypothesized that counting sequences in adults would involve representations in sensory, order, magnitude, and linguistic codes that implicate regions in auditory, supplementary motor, posterior parietal, and inferior frontal areas, respectively. The sequences were adjacent or not (e.g., 5, 6, 7, 8 vs. 5, 6, 7, 9), ordered or not (e.g., 5, 6, 7, 8 vs. 8, 5, 7, 6), and were spoken by a voice of consistent or variable identity. Then, neural substrates of counting sequences were identified by testing for the effect of consecutiveness (ordered nonadjacent versus ordered adjacent, e.g., 5, 6, 7, 9 > 5, 6, 7, 8) in the hypothesized brain regions. Violations to consecutiveness elicited brain activity in the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the supplementary motor area (SMA). Also, no activation was observed in the inferior parietal lobule, despite a robust effect of orderedness observed in that brain region. These findings indicate that listening to counting sequences do not automatically elicit sensory or magnitude codes but suggest that the precise increments in the sequence are tracked by the mechanism for processing ordered associations in the SMA and by the mechanism for binding individual lexical items into a cohesive whole in the IFG.Triploid induction is a promising biotechnique that could be used to enhance aquaculture yields in the near future. However, studies conducted with several fish species have demonstrated that the presence of an extra set of chromosomes may result in deleterious health effects. In the study presented herein, we evaluated the effects of triploid induction on hematology, erythrocyte morphometry and morphology, phagocytosis, and the expression levels of IL-1β and TGF-β using specimens of the Neotropical species, Astyanax altiparanae. In general, the cell counts of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and neutrophils in triploid fish were lower than those in diploid fish. The erythrocytes of triploid fish were larger than those found in diploid fish, but also demonstrated considerably higher frequencies of cellular and nuclear abnormalities. Although not statistically significant, triploid induction resulted in a phagocytic capacity (PC) 20% lower than that found with diploid fish.
