Complete ITS2 rDNA, partial 28S rDNA and partial cox1 mtDNA sequence data were generated for the three new species, which formed a well-supported clade in all 28S phylogenetic analyses. An expanded phylogenetic tree for the subfamily Bucephalinae Poche, 1907 is presented, demonstrating unresolved issues with the morphology-based taxonomy of the subfamily. The three largest genera, Bucephalus, Rhipidocotyle Diesing, 1858 and Prosorhynchoides Dollfus, 1929 remain extensively polyphyletic, indicating the need for significant further systematic revision. In this paper, we investigate theoretically a model of charge regulation of a single charged planar surface immersed in an aqueous electrolyte solution. Assuming that the adsorbed ions are mobile in the charged plane, we formulate a field theory of charge regulation where the numbers of adsorbed ions can be determined consistently by equating the chemical potentials of the adsorbed ions to that of the ions in the bulk. We analyze the mean-field treatment of the model for electrolyte of arbitrary valences, and then beyond, where correlation effects are systematically taken into account in a loop expansion. In particular, we compute exactly various one-loop quantities, including electrostatic potentials, ion distributions, and chemical potentials, not only for symmetric (1, 1) electrolyte but also for asymmetric (2, 1) electrolyte, and make use of these quantities to address charge regulation at the one-loop level. We find that correlation effects give rise to various phase transitions in the adsorption of ions, and present phase diagrams for (1, 1) and (2, 1) electrolytes, whose distinct behaviors suggest that charge regulation, at the one-loop level, is no longer universal but depends crucially on the valency of the ions. The original article can be found online.

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) performed on overlaying a corneal lenticule to thin recipient corneas of progressive keratoconus (KC) patients.

In this study were enrolled eyes of patients affected by progressive KC with a minimum corneal thickness less than 400µm, after overlaying a lenticule of human corneal stroma prepared with the femtosecond laser. The lenticules used were 100µm thick and of 8.5mm diameter in all the cases. Both the host cornea and the lenticules were subjected to epithelial debridement. CXL was carried out according to the standard protocol. Visual acuity, refraction, slit-lamp examination, endothelial cell density, pachymetry and keratometry, anterior segment tomography (AS-OCT) and confocal microscopy were evaluated preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6 and 12months postoperatively.

CXL was performed in 10 eyes of 8 patients (main age 23), corneal thickness range 379-414µm, mean 387.6µm. One patient was lost at follow-up. In all other cases, vd for a corneal transplant.Nature vs nurture is, and has been, a never stopping debate since Lamarck and Darwin exposed their corresponding theories on evolution, and even before them, such discussion already existed. Is suicide a heritable conduct? Is it learnt? Maybe the answer is both and none, at the same time. From genetic twin studies to epigenetic and environmental influence on development, this chapter aims to take a look at different points of view and most relevant theories in one of the worlds leading causes of death, specially for young individuals. We explore different studies aiming to find biomarkers for suicide, as well as other traits frequently encountered in individuals who engage in suicidal behavior, such as impulsivity, aggressivity, and hopelessness. Finally, this chapter also looks at some of the most recent approaches in treatment and prevention of suicidal behavior, in order to highlight what they have in common and try to explain (at least partially) why they could be effective. The aims of the current study were to develop and evaluate clindamycin palmitate hydrochloride (CPH) 3D-printed tablets (printlets) manufactured by selective laser sintering (SLS). Optimization of the formulation was performed by studying the effect of formulation and process factors on critical quality attributes of the printlets. PF-3644022 clinical trial The independent factors studied were laser scanning speed, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and lactose monohydrate (LMH) concentration. The responses measured were printlets weight, hardness, disintegration time (DT), and dissolution in 30 min. The printlets were characterized for content uniformity, chemical interactions, crystallinity, drug distribution, morphology, and porosity. The laser scanning speed showed statistically significant effects on all the studied dependent responses (p  less then  0.05). MCC showed statistically significant effects on hardness, DT, and dissolution (p  less then  0.05), while LMH showed statistically significant effect on hardness and dissolution (p  less then  0.05). The model was validated by an independent formulation, and empirical values were in close agreement with model-predicted values. X-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry data suggested a decrease in crystallinity of the LMH in the printlets. X-ray micro-CT scanning showed porous microstructure of the printlets with a porosity 24.4% and 31.1% for the printlets printed at 200 and 300 mm/s laser speed, respectively. In summary, the SLS method provides an opportunity to fabricate customized dosage forms as per patients’ need.Unfortunately, an error occurred in the author affiliations.

We studied body composition by three-dimensional photonic scanning (3DPS) and metabolic biomarkers in a large ethnically diverse cohort of individuals with severe obesity before and after weight loss by Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or adjustable gastric banding (AGB) surgery.

Male and female participants (n = 95) underwent 3DPS testing in the weeks preceding bariatric surgery (baseline), and 1year after either RYGB (n = 34) or AGB (n = 9).

Principal component analysis showed that A1C and HDL cholesterol clustered with waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Both RYGB and AGB surgeries led to similar improvements in A1C and lipids after 1year. RYGB led to greater decreases in body weight, and in most anthropometric measures, compared with AGB at 1year. However, after accounting for weight loss differences, RYGB and AGB groups did not differ in regional decreases in circumferences or volumes; the exception was a greater reduction in lean mass in RYGB compared with AGB.

Distribution of weight loss, assessed by 3DPS, did not differ between RYGB and AGB, but surgery type predicted change in lean mass at 1year.
