The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of probiotic supplementation on gastrointestinal symptoms and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).
This is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The patients were randomized into Control Group (CG) (n = 39) and Probiotic Group (PG) (n = 34). The PG received tablets containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobaterium lactis (5billion CFU/strain) for 90days, and the CG received tablets with starch. Both the Gastric Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) questionnaire and 3-day food record were answered before surgery (T0) and after 45days (T1) and 90days of surgery (T2). At T0 and T2, hydrogen breath test was used to verify the presence of SIBO.
The prevalence of SIBO was similar among times, and the mean score of GSRS responses did not differ between groups at any time. However, PG patients reported less bloating compared to CG, more abdominal pain at T1 (which reduced at T2), more episodes of soft stools and nausea and less hunger pain after surgery, with no reports of urgent episodes to evacuate, even though they consumed more fat than the CG.

To present surgical outcomes following intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in combination with lensectomy and vitrectomy for the treatment of persistent fetal vasculature (PFV).
This interventional case series included 19 eyes from 19 patients with unilateral combined PFV. Limbal lensectomy, capsulotomy, anterior vitrectomy, dissection of the retrolental membrane and stalk, and in-the-bag or in-the-sulcus IOL implantation were performed for the treatment of visually significant lenticular opacity with the presence of a retrolental fibrovascular membrane and stalk, in an eye with sufficient capsular support. Postoperative anatomical and visual outcomes were evaluated.

Due to its complexity and to existing treatment alternatives, exposure to intracranial aneurysm microsurgery at the time of neurosurgical residency is limited. The current state of the art includes training methods like assisting in surgeries, operating under supervision, and video training. These approaches are labor-intensive and difficult to fit into a timetable limited by the new work regulations. Existing virtual reality (VR)-based training modules lack patient-specific exercises and haptic properties and are thus inferior to hands-on training sessions and exposure to real surgical procedures.
We developed a physical simulator able to reproduce the experience of clipping an intracranial aneurysm based on a patient-specific 3D-printed model of the skull, brain, and arteries. The simulator is made of materials that not only imitate tissue properties including arterial wall patency, thickness, and elasticity but also able to recreate a pulsatile blood flow.
