    There is a long history of racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare and they continue to persist in contemporary society. These disparities have the potential to negatively affect morbidity and mortality in racial and ethnic minorities diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. Diagnosis, medical treatment, and rehabilitation for laryngeal cancer have improved considerably, leading to improvements in overall survival rates and physical, social, and psychological functioning. Yet members of minority and underrepresented groups are at an increased risk for experiencing reduced access to quality care and delays between diagnosis and treatment, and as a result have lower survival rates. Increasing health providers’ awareness of racial and ethnic disparities in laryngeal cancer is necessary to facilitate changes in patient and provider education, clinical practice, and health policies. The purpose of this review is to summarize current literature on disparities in laryngeal cancer diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation among Black and Hispanic patients. We present recent data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database to examine trends in laryngeal cancer and patient, provider, and health systems factors that may perpetuate these disparities. In addition, we offer interventions to address racism and other racial and ethnic biases in laryngeal cancer care and describe research and legislative actions that are needed to reduce disparities in this area.The coronavirus continues to take a devastating toll on the population of the USA. But that toll is not identical across all segments of the population. Specifically, Black citizens are more likely than their White counterparts to experience the dislocations associated with the coronavirus. Nor is the extent of racial differences fully known, given limitations to the testing, hospitalization, and other data currently compiled. What does emerge, however, is an understanding that the reported outcomes reflect social inequities rather than biological predispositions. The inequities flow from both historical forces and contemporary ones that leave sizeable fractions of the Black population without access to quality healthcare or safe environments. The discrepancies suggest that the development of safe and effective vaccines might not eliminate the racial disparities associated with COVID-19, for that development will not alone erode levels of structural racism in the society. Concerted actions that engage multiple segments and participants are demanded.

    Disparities in HIV incidence and PrEP use among Black ciswomen remain. We examine factors associated with PrEP persistence using mixed methods.

    Black ciswomen in Chicago, IL, prescribed PrEP at a federally qualified health center (FQHC).

    We used electronic health data to determine PrEP persistence (Proportion of Days Covered ≥86% at 6 months) and tested demographic and clinical factors in logistic regressions. We interviewed eight Black ciswomen, purposefully selected by PrEP persistence.

    Among 112 Black ciswomen, 18% were persistent. In adjusted models, neighborhood, visit reason (at initiation), and initiation year were significantly associated with persistence. Qualitatively, we found little evidence of cost or adherence as barriers; participants reported low community awareness, importance of providers, and concerns around stigma, side effects, and pregnancy while using PrEP.

The study was conducted to examine the ability of amniotic membrane mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) for protection against isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial injury and attempted to show the possible mechanisms by which AMSCs that can be linked to inhibition of inflammation by targeting inflammatory MAPK/NF-κB pathway. Model was established by subcutaneous injection of 170 mg/kg/day of ISO for four consecutive days. Flow cytometry and echocardiography were carried out to evaluate characterization of hAMSCs and cardiac function, respectively. The expression of inflammatory cytokines was determined using ELISA assay. The activities of NF-κB and phosphorylated p38 MAPK were measured using immunohistochemical assessments. The results showed that ISO administration was resulted in cardiac dysfunction, increased levels of inflammatory cytokines that reversed by intramyocardially administration of AMSCs (P  less then  0. 05). Cardioprotective effects of AMSCs were associated with a significant decreased expression of NF-κB and reduced levels of phosphorylated p38 MAPK (P  less then  0. 05). In conclusion, our finding showed that intramyocardially administration of AMSCs could contribute to improvement of heart function and inhibition of inflammation in the site of injury by targeting inflammatory MAPK/NF-κB pathway.Diseases negatively impact the environment, causing many health risks and the spread of pollution and hazards.
