After a long period of borderline personality disorder (BPD) research focusing on adulthood solely, accumulating evidence calls for a developmental perspective on BPD.
AIM To demonstrate translations from a developmental perspective to interventions during the earliest stages of the development of BPD.
METHOD To describe the rationale of how a clinical staging model can serve as a guideline for the development of interventions in prevention and early intervention for BPD.
RESULTS Increasing evidence shows clinically significant precursors of BPD. These findings underpin recommendations for prevention and early intervention purposes.
CONCLUSION Prevention and early intervention can improve assessment and treatment of BPD. This has implications for future health care management for people at risk for BPD. Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie 63(2021)2, 138-141.
CONCLUSION Prevention and early intervention can improve assessment and treatment of BPD. This has implications for future health care management for people at risk for BPD. Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie 63(2021)2, 138-141.Background DESPITE VARIOUS NATIONAL INITIATIVES AND A STRONG MENTAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, THE NUMBER OF SUICIDES IN THE NETHERLANDS AND FLANDERS HAS NOT CHANGED AS HOPED. Aim TO PROVIDE INSIGHT INTO THE CURRENT SUICIDE PREVENTION POLICY IN THE NETHERLANDS AND FLANDERS, AND THE EVIDENCE ON THEIR EFFECTIVENESS. Method DISCUSSION OF UNIVERSAL, SELECTIVE AND INDICATED PREVENTION INITIATIVES, AND OF THE EVIDENCE FOR THE VARIOUS INITIATIVES, BASED ON THE USE OF REVIEWS AND META-ANALYSIS. Results THERE IS A NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AGENDA IN BOTH THE NETHERLANDS AND FLANDERS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO DEMONSTRATE THE DIRECT EFFECT OF THE VARIOUS INITIATIVES ON NATIONAL SUICIDE RATES, BECAUSE OF THE LOW BASE RATE, AND BECAUSE OF ITS MULTIPLE CAUSES. Conclusion THERE ARE LITTLE EVIDENCE FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION STRATEGIES. THIS DOES NOT MEAN SUICIDE PREVENTION HAS NO USE, BUT MODESTY SEEMS IN PLACE. Key words EVALUATION, POLICY, RCT, SUICIDE PREVENTION TIJDSCHRIFT VOOR PSYCHIATRIE 63(2021)2, 133-137.background In the past 25 years, 50 randomised controlled trials have examined the effects of preventive interventions on preventing the onset of new depressive disorders. aim To describe the state of affairs in research into the prevention of depression. method Narrative review of the field. results These trials have shown that preventive interventies can indeed prevent the onset of depression in some cases. The absolute effects of the interventions are, however, modest and most trial participants don’t develop a disorder, also not when they don’t get an intervention. An important challenge for the future is to strengthen the effects of the interventions and to identify high-risk groups with higher absolute risk to develop a disorder. Another challenge is to increase participation rates. conclusion Innovations, such as new methods to identify high-risk groups, better and more efficient interventions and ‘indirect’ prevention offer new possibilities to improve the field of prevention. Most substance use disorders (SUD) emerge in adolescence and early adulthood. Early interventions in young people may reduce the risk and severity of SUD and other psychiatric disorders.
AIM To provide suggestions for proactive psychiatry in addiction.
METHOD Literature review.
RESULTS Comorbidity, cumulative risks and self-regulation skills each play an important role in proactive psychiatry. Early universal prevention and intervention targeted at improving self-regulation reduces the risk of a broad array of psychiatric and social problems, including addiction.
CONCLUSION In terms of broad prevention, much can be gained by widespread, consistent implementation and normalization of universal prevention at the pre- and elementary school level. Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie 63(2021)2, 125-128.

COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS ARE COMMONLY REPORTED IN PATIENTS WITH UNIPOLAR OR BIPOLAR MOOD DISORDER. THE PREVALENCE OF COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS INCREASES WITH AGEING. PLX3397 purchase THE PRESENCE AND EXTENT OF COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS HAS A DIRECT NEGATIVE IMPACT ON RECOVERY OF THE PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS AND QUALITY OF LIFE.
AIM IMPROVING OUTCOME OF OLDER PATIENTS WITH A UNIPOLAR OR BIPOLAR MOOD DISORDER.
METHOD REVIEW OF AVAILABLE INTERVENTIONS TO IMPROVE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING DIRECT OR INDIRECT.
RESULTS STRATEGY TRAINING, TRAINING OF COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS AND PHYSICAL EXERCISE HAVE SHOWN TO BE EFFECTIVE TO IMPROVE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING AND ITS POSSIBLE ADVANTAGES FOR PSYCHIATRIC POPULATIONS ARE CURRENTLY STUDIED IN THE NETHERLANDS. TREATMENT OF COMORBID INSOMNIA BY COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY MAY IMPROVE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING INDIRECTLY BY DISCONTINUATION OF SLEEP MEDICATION, IMPROVEMENT OF SLEEP AND MOOD RELATED COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS.
CONCLUSION A PROACTIVE APPROACH, INCLUDING SCREENING AND TREATMENT OF COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS BEFORE IMPAIRMENT OCCURS, IS WARRANTED TO OPTIMIZE OUTCOME OF THE AGEING PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT. CONCLUSION A PROACTIVE APPROACH, INCLUDING SCREENING AND TREATMENT OF COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS BEFORE IMPAIRMENT OCCURS, IS WARRANTED TO OPTIMIZE OUTCOME OF THE AGEING PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT. TIJDSCHRIFT VOOR PSYCHIATRIE 63(2021)2, 120-124.background Psychiatric disorders in adults often result from psychiatric problems during childhood and adolescence. aim In the light of prevention of psychiatric disorders in adults, we focus on adolescence. method Based on the working method of the transitional psychiatry unit, we describe the characteristics of the patient group and the necessities of adequate treatment and care for young people who are suffering from a stagnation in development due to psychiatric problems. results Family therapy, new authority/non-violent resistance and our own RAISING skills are tools for treating these young people. Here we focus on the adolescent’s development. This early treatment prevents the development of irreversible symptoms and serious psychiatric illness during adulthood. conclusion Transitional psychiatry forms part of the answer in the search of pro-active medicine.
