We sought to investigate the association between diabetes mellitus and incidence of adverse outcomes in patients who underwent meningioma surgery.
The 2012-2014 National Inpatient Sample database was used. Prolonged length of stay was indicated by values greater than the 90th percentile of the sample. The Fisher exact test and analysis of variance were used to compare demographics, hospital characteristics, comorbidity, and complications among race cohorts. Logistic regression was used to analyze the independent effect of diabetes on adverse outcomes.
After selecting for patients with primary diagnosis of meningioma who underwent a resection procedure, 7745 individuals were identified and divided into diabetic (n= 1518) and nondiabetic (n= 6227) cohorts. Demographics, hospital characteristics, and comorbidities were significantly different among the 2 cohorts. Average length of stay was longer in diabetic patients (8.15 vs. 6.04 days, P < 0.001), and total charges were higher in diabetic patients ($1tive measures must be taken to optimize postoperative outcomes in these patients.
We assessed the sequential magnetic resonance imaging changes of indirect neural decompression after minimally invasive lumbar lateral interbody fusion (LIF) combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw (PPS) fixation for degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) according to the severity of preoperative lumbar spinal stenosis.
A total of 43 patients (mean age, 68.7 years; 16 men and 27 women) with DS who had undergone LIF and closed reduction with PPS fixation were enrolled. The intervertebral levels were divided into the moderate stenosis (MS) group (preoperative cross-sectional area [CSA] of the thecal sac >50 mm
) and severe stenosis (SS) group (CSA ≤50 mm
). The CSA, ligamentum flavum thickness, and diameter of the thecal sac at the affected level were measured on cross-sectional magnetic resonance images at baseline, immediately postoperatively, and 2 years postoperatively.
For the 31 and 29 intervertebral levels in the MS and SS groups, the mean CSA at baseline, immediately postoperatively, severe stenosis. The effect of indirect neural decompression was equivalent even in those with severe lumbar spinal stenosis.
We sought to examine the conservative treatment of symptomatic spinal cavernomas and evaluate the efficacy and safety of surgical management of spinal cord cavernous malformations.
This meta-analysis included articles comparing outcomes of conservative treatment and surgical management of spinal cavernomas, published in the full-text form (from 2000 to June 31, 2020). Collected variables included first author name, country, covered study period, publication year, the total number of patients and at follow-up, bleeding, motor weakness, pain, bladder and/or bowel dysfunction neurologic improvement or deterioration after discharge, and the need for reintervention after subtotal surgical resection or hemorrhage.
After the initial searching and applying all exclusion and inclusion criteria, there were 9 articles left in the final article pool. The total number of patients was 396 with 264 (66.6%) undergoing surgical resection and 132 (33.4%) electing conservative management. Regarding motor weakness, bladdernoma seems to lead to slight neurologic improvement in some patients. In nonhemorrhagic cavernomas, conservative treatment might be optimal due to surgery-related morbidity risks.
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most lethal primary tumor in the central nervous system. Ferroptosis is a type of programmed iron-dependent cell death. In the present study, we aimed to identify prognostic ferroptosis-related genes and their role in tumor immunity.
We used differential and survival analysis and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) GBM RNA sequencing data. We also used systematic bioinformatic methods.
Using differential and survival analysis, we found that a ferroptosis suppressor was predominant within ferroptosis-related genes in TCGA GBM RNA sequencing data. By integrating TCGA and gene expression omnibus GBM cohorts, 12 dysregulated ferroptosis suppressors were detected. Among the suppressors, CD44, heat shock protein family B (small) member 1 (HSPB1), and solute carrier family 40 member 1 (SLC40A1) were relevant to overall survival. Using systematic bioinformatic methods, we observed that ferroptosis suppressor expression correlated with immunosuppression, which could be attributed to T-cell exhaustion and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte evasion. Finally, we observed that a potential ferroptosis-inducing drug, acetaminophen, interacted with CD44, HSPB1, and SLC40A1.

Although titanium implants are used most commonly, they produce significant artifact, leading to decreased confidence in target-volume coverage and normal tissue sparing. Carbon-based materials have been found to have minimal effects on dose perturbation in postoperative radiation therapy and have shown biostability and biocompatibility that are comparable to titanium implants. Using the PubMed and Web of Sciences databases, we conducted a systematic review of carbon-based screw and rod fixation systems in the treatment of spinal tumors. We reviewed clinical studies regarding safety of spine fixation with carbon fiber-reinforced (CFR) implants and biomechanical studies, as well as radiation and dosimetric studies. The radiolucency of CFR-polyether ether ketone implants has the potential to benefit patients with spine tumor. Q-VD-Oph in vivo Clinical studies have shown no increase in complications with implementation of CFR-polyether ether ketone implants, and these devices seem to have sufficient stiffness and pullout strength.
