Proteins with a metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) fold have been largely studied in bacteria in the framework of resistance to beta-lactams, but their spectrum of activities is broader. We show here that the giant Tupanvirus also encodes a MBL fold-protein that has orthologs in other giant viruses, a deep phylogenetic root and is clustered with tRNases. This protein is significantly associated with translation components in giant viruses. After expression in Escherichia coli, it was found to hydrolyse nitrocefin, a beta-lactam, and penicillin G. This was inhibited by sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. In addition, the tupanvirus MBL fold-protein was not active on single- or double-stranded DNA, but degraded RNAs from bacteria and Acanthamoeba castellanii, the tupanvirus amoebal host. This activity was not neutralized by sulbactam. Overall, our results still broaden the host range of MBL fold-proteins, showing dual beta-lactamase/nuclease activities in giant viruses.The coherent nonlinear process where a single photon simultaneously excites two or more two-level systems (qubits) in a single-mode resonator has recently been theoretically predicted. Here we explore the case where the two qubits are placed in different resonators in an array of two or three weakly coupled resonators. Investigating different setups and excitation schemes, we show that this process can still occur with a probability approaching one under specific conditions. The obtained results provide interesting insights into subtle causality issues underlying the simultaneous excitation processes of qubits placed in different resonators.Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is an easily accessible and valuable tool in clinical microbiology, which can be used for identifying novel and rare species. We isolated gram-positive cocci from the blood of a pediatric patient, which could not be phenotypically identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) (BioMérieux, Marcy-l’Étoile, France). selleckchem We could not identify the isolate to the species level using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequencing. WGS was performed using the Illumina MiSeq platform (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA); however, the subsequent genomic sequence database search using the TrueBac ID-Genome system (ChunLab, Inc., Seoul, Korea) did not yield any hits with an average nucleotide identity value >95.0%, which is the cut-off for species-level identification. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the isolate belonged to a new Arsenicicoccus species, forming a subcluster with Arsenicicoccus bolidensis. Our data demonstrate that WGS allows a more accurate annotation of microbial genomes than other clinical microbiology tools, such as MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA sequencing. Here, high-resolution diatom-bound nitrogen isotope measurements from the Indian sector of the Antarctic Zone reveal three modes of change in Southern Westerly Wind-driven upwelling, each affecting atmospheric carbon dioxide. Two modes, related to global climate and the bipolar seesaw, have been proposed previously. The third mode-which arises from the meridional temperature gradient as affected by Earth’s obliquity (axial tilt)-can explain the lag of atmospheric carbon dioxide behind climate during glacial inception and deglaciation. This obliquity-induced lag, in turn, makes carbon dioxide a delayed climate amplifier in the late Pleistocene glacial cycles.
In the absence of effective treatments or vaccines, non-pharmaceutical interventions are the mainstay of control in the COVID-19 pandemic. Refugee populations in displacement camps live under adverse conditions that are likely to favour the spread of disease. To date, only a few cases of COVID-19 have appeared in refugee camps, and whether feasible non-pharmaceutical interventions can prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in such settings remains untested.
We constructed the first spatially explicit agent-based model of a COVID-19 outbreak in a refugee camp, and applied it to evaluate feasible non-pharmaceutical interventions. We parameterised the model using published data on the transmission rates and progression dynamics of COVID-19, and demographic and spatial data from Europe’s largest refugee camp, the Moria displacement camp on Lesbos, Greece. We simulated COVID-19 epidemics with and without four feasible interventions.
Spatial subdivision of the camp (‘sectoring’) was able to ‘flatten the c spread of COVID-19 in a refugee camp setting, and provide an evidence base for camp managers planning intervention strategies. Our model can be modified to study other closed populations at risk from COVID-19 or future epidemics.
Surgical treatment of hyperparathyroidism related to chronic kidney disease is a real challenge for Brazilian public health care. High cost medications and long waiting lines to perform preoperative exams, especially technetium Tc 99m Sestamibi (MIBI) are some of the reasons. Despite the reality that the aid of localization exams are questionable in this scenario, doctors are too apprehensive in performing surgery without it.
The study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of surgery for renal hyperparathyroidism without preoperative MIBI.
A total of 114 patients were surgically treated. Total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation and subtotal parathyroidectomy were carried out without preoperative MIBI.
Among the 114 patients undergoing surgery, 37 had secondary hyperparathyroidism in dialysis replacement, and 77 patients had post-renal transplant persistent disease. We were successful in 107 cases with only 7 failures (93.8% of success rate). Among these failures, only one parathyroid gland was not found in 4 cases, 2 parathyroid glands were not found in 2 cases and in 1 patient the 4 glands were found but this patient remained hypercalcemic and a postoperative diagnosis of supernumerary parathyroid gland was made. Surgery for treatment of renal hyperparathyroidism proved to be an effective (93.8%) and reproductible procedure, even without MIBI.
