Implementation of a developmentally and NA culturally tailored brief protocol revealed partnering with Native Americans and utilizing CBPR facilitated engagement with this hard-to-reach, underserved community; age and culture are associated with substance use severity among NA teens; a culturally adapted Motivational Interviewing (MI) brief intervention may be effective in reducing marijuana use among NA youth; the Native Reliance theory proved useful as a framework for working with this population; and RE-AIM proved helpful in conceptualizing health equity promoting D&I.Relationship to place is integral to Indigenous health. A qualitative, secondary phenomenological analysis of in-depth interviews with four non-Choctaw Indigenous women participating in an outdoor, experiential tribally-specific Choctaw health leadership study uncovered culturally grounded narratives using thematic analysis as an analytic approach. Results revealed that physically being in historical trauma sites of other Indigenous groups involved a multi-faceted process that facilitated embodied stress by connecting participants with their own historical and contemporary traumas. Participants also experienced embodied resilience through connectedness to place and collective resistance. Implications point to the role of place in developing collective resistance and resilience through culturally and methodologically innovative approaches.
This article examined two-wave longitudinal paths among maternal self-efficacy, maternal warmth, and early adolescents’ prosocial behavior.
Participants were 194 Italian mother/child dyads from 9-13 years at the first assessment and 12-15 years at the second assessment. Using a two-wave longitudinal design, the present study tested cross-lagged paths among maternal self-efficacy, warmth, and early adolescents’ prosocial behavior controlling for the stability of these variables and their concurrent associations.
Maternal warmth mediated the link between maternal self-efficacy and adolescents’ prosocial behavior, and bi-directional effects between maternal self-efficacy and maternal warmth were found.
These findings support a parent-driven model in the promotion of prosocial behaviors across early adolescence and a general need to consider simultaneously parental cognitions (maternal self-efficacy) and actions (maternal warmth) in explaining adolescents’ prosocial behaviors. Implications for parenting program interventions are discussed.

Substance use before sex is associated with riskier behaviors. Sex-related substance use motives may explain pre-sex substance use. We explored what sex-related motives are associated with alcohol versus drug use, and which motives underlie heavier use.
A sample of 936 participants (50% male, 80% White) completed an Internet survey about sexuality. Those who drank before sex (n=657) reported on six sex-related drinking motives; those who used drugs before sex (n=271) reported on six (parallel) sex-related drug use motives. The frequency of endorsement of each motive between drinkers and drug users was compared with z-distributions. Logistic regressions assessed whether motives were associated with substance use frequency and intoxication before sex.
Substance use to relax and to get a sex partner to use were more commonly endorsed for alcohol than drugs; substance use to improve performance and enhance experience were more commonly endorsed for drugs. Most motives were associated with alcohol frequency and intoxication before sex. None were associated with drug frequency; some were associated with drug intoxication.
Alcohol was generally used to facilitate sex, and drugs to enhance sex. Sex-related drinking motives were associated with drinking before sex; sex-related drug use motives were less predictive.

Alcohol and drug treatment providers are increasingly emphasizing the role of long-term, community-based systems of care. Mirdametinib supplier A good example is Sober Living Houses (SLHs), which are peer operated alcohol- and drug-free living environments. Studies show residents of SLHs make significant improvements in multiple areas. However, little attention has been devoted to describing the critically important role of SLH managers who oversee these homes.
Thirty-five SLH managers completed interviews about the characteristics and operations of their houses, their activities as managers, and ways their own recovery was affected by their work.
Managers reported widespread use of some but not all principles of social model recovery. Manager roles varied dramatically in terms of time spent managing houses, activities related to their roles, and training they received. Some reported extensive amounts of time proving support to residents, while others viewed their role as primarily administrative.
Research is needed to understand reasons for manager differences, optimal manager functioning, and manager training needs. Research is also needed to assess whether different house characteristics require different manager roles.

While the Chinese education system has seen massive improvements over the past few decades, there still exists large academic achievement gaps between rural and urban areas, which threaten China’s long-term development. Additionally, recent literature has underscored the importance of early childhood development (ECD) in later-life human capital development.
We analyze the lifecycle of cognitive development and learning outcomes in rural Chinese children by first examining if ECD outcomes affect cognition levels, then seeing if cognitive delays persist as children grow, and finally exploring connections between cognition and education outcomes.
We combine data from four recent studies examining different age groups (0-3, 4-5, 10-11, 13-14) to track cognitive outcomes.
First, we find that ECD outcomes for children in rural China are poor, with almost one-in-two children being cognitively delayed. Second, we find that these cognitive delays seem to persist into middle school, with almost 37% of rural junior high school students being cognitively delayed.
