Using ecological momentary assessment, participants (N = 99) were randomly prompted 7 times a day for 1 week, where they were asked questions about momentary affect, their perceived level of momentary distress tolerance, and their momentary willpower. Each night they were also asked about stressors experienced that day and intensity of their subjective response to those stressors and their daily experience of being invalidated. Results found that higher personality dysfunction, assessed at baseline, predicted greater daily negative affect, less daily positive affect, more intensely experienced stressors, and more perceived invalidation. We also found that personality dysfunction interacted with positive affect in predicting momentary self-efficacy and daily invalidation; people with greater personality dysfunction experienced lower momentary willpower, higher distress intolerance and stronger perceived invalidation alongside lower positive affect. These findings provide evidence that personality functioning influences daily life as well as support the use of the alterative model of personality disorders in conceptualizing personality pathology. Research has primarily focused on older adults or the pharmacokinetics of specific medication-alcohol combinations. Little work has focused on the subjective experience of persons who take alcohol-interactive (AI) medications and also drink alcohol, particularly in psychiatric samples at high risk for problematic alcohol use and high rates of prescription medication use, such as individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Data from a larger ecological momentary assessment study of alcohol use in 52 persons diagnosed with BPD (83% women; Mage = 26 years) were used to examine the influence of alcohol intoxication (i.e., estimated blood alcohol concentration [eBAC]) and medication co-use on momentary subjective experience while drinking. Participants reported AI medication use at baseline and completed multiple ecological momentary assessment reports per day over 21 days, which included reports of alcohol use, subjective effects of alcohol (e.g., pleasure, feeling worse), and negative and positive affect. AI medications significantly moderated the association between eBAC and pleasurable effects of alcohol, such that at higher levels of eBAC, those taking AI medications experienced blunted subjective pleasure compared with those not taking AI medications. Specifically, preference for solitude, rather than social wariness, was expected to predict peer victimization and rejection, two aspects of peer difficulties. A total of 1,014 children from the Quebec Newborn Twin Study were assessed by teachers and peers at ages 6, 7, and 10 years. Multilevel analyses conducted across three levels, between family, within family, and within person, revealed that preference for solitude, rather than social wariness, increased the risk for peer difficulties in terms of both peer victimization and peer rejection. Specifically, preference for solitude was systematically associated with peer rejection starting at age 6 years and became progressively associated with peer victimization over time. This pattern was found both between and within families. In addition, the predictive association with peer rejection was found within genetically identical, monozygotic twin pairs, suggesting that this predictive association existed after taking into account genetic vulnerabilities. selleck Social wariness was systematically unrelated to peer difficulties. They are particularly relevant in geometrically confined spaces such as the interior of the chaperonin, at the interface between ligands and their binding partners, and in the ribosome tunnel. Inspired in part by the geometry of the ribosome tunnel, we consider confinement effects on the stability of peptides. We describe results from replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations of a system containing a 23-alanine or 23-serine polypeptide confined to nonpolar and polar nanotubes in the gas phase and when open to a water reservoir. We quantify the effect of water in determining the preferred conformational states of these polypeptides by calculating the difference in the solvation free energy for the helix and coil states in the open nanotube in the two phases. Our simulations reveal several possibilities. We find that nanoscopic confinement preferentially stabilizes the helical state of polypeptides with hydrophobic side chains, which is explained by the entropic stabilization mechanism proposed on the basis of polymer physics.
