    The objective of this study is to examine factors associated with thrombus extension after early experience with mechanochemical ablation, which combines mechanical damage to the venous endothelium with infusion of a sclerosant.

    A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent mechanochemical ablation to treat saphenous vein insufficiency in the thigh including the saphenofemoral junction. Data abstracted included patient demographics, procedural details, and postprocedural outcomes. Thrombus extension was determined by postprocedural duplex ultrasound and classified as flush closure with the femoral vein and any extension of thrombus into the femoral vein.

    Seventy-three patients met inclusion criteria. The mean age of the population was 60, 17.8% were female, and the mean body mass index (BMI) was 30.7. Seven (9.6%) patients who underwent mechanochemical ablation experienced saphenous vein closure flush with the femoral vein. Eleven (15%) patients experience extension of thrombus to less cohort, the incidence of thrombus extension into the femoral vein with mechanochemical ablation was high relative to rates of thrombus extension associated with reported rates of thermal ablation. Further investigation with larger cohorts, and standardized reporting is required to characterize the true rate of thrombus extension after mechanochemical ablation and identify maneuvers which may prevent thrombus extension.

    This study analyses limb occlusion rates after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) with a strategy including stent-graft limb selection and liberal primary stenting (relining) in anatomies at higher risk for occlusion with uncovered self-expandable or balloon-expandable stents.

    All patients undergoing elective EVAR with a bifurcated stent-graft between January 2010-August 2018 were included. A protocol involving personalized stent-graft selection and liberal primary relining based on preoperative imaging was followed during the whole period. Primary endpoints were technical success and primary limb patency during follow-up. Secondary endpoints included mortality and limb reintervention rates. Risk factors associated to limb patency and reintervention rates were analyzed.

    Six hundred and fifteen patients (548 males; mean age 72.9 ± 9 years) were included. Overall technical success was 98.5% (606/615). One (0.16%) patient died during the first 30 days. Of the 1230 limbs, 96 (8%) were deemed at risk for ocatency and lower reintervention rates than other stent-graft types.

In this study, we co-encapsulated VP37 and VP28 dsRNA into hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) like particle and investigated its protection against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Five micrograms of each dsRNA were used as starting materials to load into VLP, while the loading efficiency was slightly different, i.e, VP37 dsRNA had somewhat a better load into VLP’s cavity. It was apparent that co-encapsulation of dual dsRNA showed a superior WSSV silencing ability than the single dsRNA counterpart as evidence by the lower WSSV gene expression and its copy number in the gill tissues. Besides, we also demonstrated that co-encapsulated dual dsRNA into IHHNV-VLP stimulated the increased number of hemocytes and the corresponding PO activity as well as up-regulated proPO gene expression in hemocytes to resist viral invasion after an acute stage of WSSV infection. This synergistic action of dual dsRNA encapsulated into IHHNV-VLPs could thus act to delay time of shrimp death and reduced shrimp cumulative mortality greater than the single, naked dsRNA treatment and positive control groups. The obtaining results would encourage the feasibility to use it as a new weapon to fight WSSV infection in shrimp aquaculture.Disease is one of the major bottlenecks for aquaculture development, costing the industry in excess of US $6 billion each year. The increase in pressure to phase out some traditional approaches to disease control (e.g. antibiotics) is pushing farmers to search for alternatives to treat and prevent disease outbreaks, which do not have detrimental consequences (e.g. antibiotic resistance). We tested the effects of eleven seaweed species and four established fish immunostimulants on the innate immune response (cellular and humoral immunity) of the rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens. All supplements including different seaweeds from the three groups (Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta) were included in the fish pellet at 3% (by weight) and had variably positive effects across the four innate immune parameters we measured compared to control fish. Diets supplemented with the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis and the brown seaweed Dictyota intermedia led to the largest boosts in humoral and cellular innate immune defences, including particularly significant increases in haemolytic activity. We conclude that dietary seaweed supplements can boost the immune response of S. fuscescens and thus the top three species highlighted in this study should be further investigated for this emerging aquaculture species and other fish species.
