We demonstrate here that detailed neuroimaging may have the potential to fill this important gap in mood disorder therapeutics. Lithium treatment and bipolar disorder have both been shown to affect anatomy of the hippocampi and amygdalae but there is no consensus on the nature of their effects. We aimed to investigate structural surface anatomy changes in amygdala and hippocampus correlated with treatment response in bipolar disorder. Patients with bipolar disorder (N = 14) underwent lithium treatment, were classified by response status at acute and long-term time points, and scanned with 7 Tesla structural MRI. Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping was applied to detect local differences in hippocampal and amygdalar anatomy between lithium responders and non-responders. Anatomy was also compared to 21 healthy comparison participants. A patch of the ventral surface of the left hippocampus was found to be significantly atrophied in non-responders as compared to responders at the acute time point and was associated at a trend-level with long-term response status. We did not detect an association between response status and surface anatomy of the right hippocampus or amygdala. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first shape analysis of hippocampus and amygdala in bipolar disorder using 7 Tesla MRI. These results can inform future work investigating possible neuroimaging predictors of lithium response in bipolar disorder.Objectives This study was designed to assess the effect of COVID-19 home quarantine and its lifestyle challenges on the sleep quality and mental health of a large sample of undergraduate University students in Jordan. It is the first study applied to the Jordanian population. The aim was to investigate how quarantine for several weeks changed the students’ habits and affected their mental health. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using a random representative sample of 6,157 undergraduate students (mean age 19.79 ± 1.67 years, males 28.7%) from the University of Jordan through voluntarily filling an online questionnaire. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) were used to assess sleep quality and depressive symptoms, respectively. read more Results The PSQI mean score for the study participants was 8.1 ± 3.6. The sleep quality of three-quarters of the participants was negatively affected by the extended quarantine. Our goal was to find out what chronic opioid treatment does to pain tolerance as measured by the cold pressor test (CPT), an objective measure of pain tolerance, and to find an alternative effective treatment for chronic pain and FM. Materials and Methods The setting was an academic addiction medicine service that has an embedded pain service. Patients had routine clinical care starting with an evaluation that included assessment of medical and psychiatric conditions. Participants were 55 patients with OIH and 21 patients with fibromyalgia; all had at least two CPTs. Treatment included a single dose of buprenorphine for detoxification. In this open-label case series, patients were treated with low dose naltrexone (LDN), a pure opioid receptor antagonist that, we hypothesize, treats OIH and FM by restoring endogenous opioid tone. Results Comparing initial and last CPT times, those with OIH more than quadrupled their pain tolerance, and those with FM doubled theirs. This improved pain tolerance for OIH and FM was statistically significant (p less then 0.0001 and p = 0.003, respectively) and had a large effect size (r = 0.82 and r = 0.63, respectively). Discussion Results suggest that patients on chronic opioid therapy should have pain tolerance measured by CPT with detoxification and LDN provided to correct opioid induced hyperalgesia if found. The main limitation of the findings was lack of a randomized control group treated with placebo.Background and Aims Malaysia’s first Movement Control Order (MCO) or “lockdown” was in place for 6 weeks to curb the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Consequently, all universities were forced to close temporarily with abrupt changes to teaching and learning activities. However, there has been a lack of consensus regarding students’ actual psychological status and mental health during the MCO implementation. This study investigates the link, state, and differences of negative emotional symptoms, happiness, and work-life balance among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology This study recruited 1,005 university students across Malaysia. Data was collected online using Qualtrics to measure negative emotional symptoms (The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale), happiness (The Oxford Happiness Inventory), and work-life balance (Work-Family Conflict Scale). All data was analyzed using SPSS version 25 and AMOS version 26 using T-test, ANOVA, logistic regression analyses, and path anaere anxiety (OR = 1.317, 95% CI 1.059, 1.638) under increasing score of family-to-work conflict. Besides, happiness is found to negatively linked with lower negative emotional symptoms, while work-family conflict and family-work conflict are positively linked with higher negative emotional symptoms. Conclusion Lockdown implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic appears to have a significant impact on university students’ negative emotional symptoms, happiness, and work-life balance. Happiness was found to be a protective factor while the state of work-life balance is a risk factor that can predict students’ negative emotional symptoms.
