The significant enhancement of Microcystis spp. biomass by Co addition further indicated that Co was the potential limiting nutrient for cyanobacterial blooms. This work provides new ideas for better management strategies of eutrophication in shallow lakes.Heavy metals associated with airborne particulate matter are detrimental to human health, but risk assessment is difficult due to the technical challenges of determining exposure rates. In houses and other buildings, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is equipped with an air filter that captures airborne particulate matter from the indoor air that enters the HVAC system. This study used the air filter dust as a proxy for the heavy metal exposure of children and adults, based on a household study in Kuwait. Air filter dust contained from 12.5 ± 5 mg Co/kg dust to 14 453 ± 5046 mg Fe/kg dust. Houses had high levels of Fe, Al, Zn, and Mn and relatively low concentrations of As and Co. Source apportionment revealed that metals in air filter dust were from natural and anthropogenic sources, including vehicular emissions, fossil fuel combustion, and metals-related industries. The total Hazard Index (HI; Σ exposure routes) for heavy metals was >1 for children and adults. Total cancer risks (TCR; Σ exposure routes) were 5.93 × 10-3 (95% CI 5.28 × 10-3- 6.59 × 10-3) for children and 5.16 × 10-3 (95% CI 4.59 × 10-3 – 5.73 × 10-3) for adults. Heavy metals, particularly the Cr and Pb concentrations, contribute to the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks of children and adults in Kuwait households. As emerging contaminants, PAEs (Phthalic Acid Esters or Phthalate Esters) have been extensively utilized in industrial production to soften the rigid plastics (plasticizers), and their related products are widely distributed in our daily life. The PAEs can readily transfer from the products to the surrounding environment due to not being chemically bound to the products. In this study, we analyzed the PAEs’ properties, usage, and consumption in the world, as well as toxicity to human beings. As endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), PAEs can disturb the normal hormones reactions, resulting in developmental and reproductive problems. Thus, we have to concern the removal strategies of PAEs. We summarized two novel approaches, including biochars and persulfate (PS) oxidation for effectively removing PAEs in the literature. Their characteristics, removal mechanisms, and the main impact factors on the removal of PAEs were highlighted. Moreover, transition metal-activated PS showed good performance on PAEs degradation. Furthermore, the synergy of biochars and transition metals-PS can overcome the disadvantages of a single approach, and show better performance on the removal of PAEs. Finally, we put forward vital strategies to update two approaches (including the combined) for enhancing the removal of PAEs. It is expected that the researchers or scientists can get a hint on effectively remediating PAEs-contaminated sites via the biochars’ sorption/transition metals-PS or the combined two from this review paper. The efflorescence transitions of aerosol particles have been intensively investigated due to their critical impacts on global climate and atmospheric chemistry. In the present study, we present a critical review of efflorescence kinetics focusing on three key issues the efflorescence relative humidity (ERH) and the influence factors for aerosol ERH (e.g. particle sizes, and temperature); efflorescence processes of mixed aerosols, concerning the effect of coexisting inorganic and organic components on the efflorescence of inorganic salts; homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation rates of pure and mixed aerosols. Among the previous studies, there are significant discrepancies for measured aerosol ERH under even the same conditions. Moreover, the interactions between organic and inorganic components remain largely unclear, causing efflorescence transition behaviours and chemical composition evolutions of certain mixed systems to be debatable. Thus, it is important to better understand efflorescence to gain insights into the physicochemical properties and characterize observed efflorescence characteristics of atmospheric particles, as well as guide further studies on aerosol hygroscopicity and reactivity.
To evaluate the implementation of advanced practice nursing for patients with minor orthopedic injuries, including comparison of outcomes in relation to advanced practice nurse versus standard (physician-led) care models.
A non-inferiority study was performed in an emergency department in Norway, where advanced practice nursing is in an initial stage of implementation. The non-inferiority design was chosen to test whether the new advanced practice nursing model does not compromise quality of care compared to the standard care model already in use.
Patients with minor orthopedic injuries were assessed and treated by either advanced practice nursing or standard (physician-led) care models. Participating patients were assigned to the professional available at presentation. In the nursing model, registered nurses worked at an advanced level/applied advanced practice nursing following in-house-training. Senior orthopedic specialists evaluated the diagnostic and treatment accuracy in both models. Data were cod practice nurse care model is encouraged.
In countries where health coverage is not universal, there is ample evidence of disparities in healthcare, often associated with insurance. People with seizures, similar to those living with any complicated chronic medical comorbidity, need further health-related attention to improve their quality-of-life outcomes.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study of the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) component of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) national database between 1997-2014. The analysis focused on the mortality rate, and patients with a principal admission diagnosis of seizure at the time of discharge were identified. AT13387 cell line Primary Payer Status (PPS) included Medicare, Medicaid, private, and uninsured. Multivariate linear regression modeling was conducted to examine the contribution of the predictive variables to in-hospital mortality.
Between 1997-2014, 4,594,213 seizure-related discharges was recorded. The overall mean patient age was 41.69 ± 0.98 years, and 58.1 % were female. The average age during this period decreased significantly in Medicare, increased substantially in uninsured, without significant change in Medicaid and private.
