e important tools to limit or prevent stroke-related morbidity and mortality.

Certification of out-of-hospital deaths is challenging as physicians are often unavailable at the scene. In these situations, emergency medical services will generally transport the decedent to the nearest hospital. In 2011, a remote death certification program was implemented in the province of Québec, Canada. The program was managed through an online medical control center and enabled death certification by a remote physician. We sought to evaluate the implementation and feasibility of the remote death certification program and to describe the challenges we experienced.

We retrospectively reviewed all remote death certification requests received at the online medical control center between 2011 and 2019. Data were collected from the online medical control center database and records. Feasibility was determined by evaluating the remote death certification rate.

Overall, 84.1% of remote death certification requests were realized, producing a total of 9776 death certificates. Male decedents accounted for numerous challenges, this process is feasible and offers a valuable option to manage out-of-hospital deaths. The remote death certification program is spreading in the remaining regions of Québec. Future studies will aim to quantify how much time this process saves for emergency medical services in each region of the province.

    The management of

infection is considered a challenge especially in an intensive care setting. The resistance rate makes it difficult to manage and is believed to lead to higher mortality. We aim to investigate the prevalence of

and explore how different antibiotic regimens could impact patient outcomes as there are no available published data to reflect our population in our region.

We conducted a retrospective review of all infected adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit at King Fahad University Hospital with a confirmed laboratory diagnosis of

from 1 January 2013 until 31 December 2017. Positive cultures were obtained from the microbiology department and those meeting the inclusive criteria were selected. Variables were analyzed using descriptive analysis and cross-tabulation. Results were further reviewed and audited by blinded co-authors.

A comprehensive review of data identified 198 patients with

    . The prevalence of

is 3.37%, and the overall mortality rate is 40.81%. Our y intensive care unit physician. Further prospective studies are needed.

The current study aims to understand and assess the consequences of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on Palestinian families.

This online community-based cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between 19 April 2020 and 5 June 2020, using a validated questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised of three sections sociodemographic characteristics, living conditions, and impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. A convenience sampling method was used to select participants.

A total of 570 adults aged ⩾18 years participated in the study. Of them, 258 (45.3%), 120 (21%), and 192 (33.7%) were residing in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem, respectively. A large portion of participants (73.2%) reported that the containment measures of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic had caused an excessive burden on their families; 549 (96.3%) revealed that water supplies were not always available at home. However, paying attention to personal hygiene and home cleaning was more than usual before the announcement of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. The mean times of going out of their homes have dropped significantly following the onset of the pandemic,

value = 0.001 (95% confidence interval). In addition, 192 (33.7%) participants reported that they changed to working remotely from home with 66 (11.6%) having lost their employment.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic was associated with an additional burden on the Palestinian families. Moreover, we suggest discussing the obtained results with local and national stakeholders to ensure that they know to improve their actions.

Significant mortality is associated with delays in appropriate antibiotic therapy in

infections. The impact of empiric dosing on clinical outcomes has been largely unreported.

This retrospective cohort compared treatment failure in patients receiving guideline-concordant or guideline-discordant empiric therapy with cefepime, meropenem, or piperacillin/tazobactam. Patients with culture-positive

between 1 July 2013 and 31 July 2019 were eligible for inclusion. CC-5013 hemihydrate Patients with cystic fibrosis, polymicrobial infection, and urinary or pulmonary colonization were excluded. The composite primary outcome was treatment failure, defined as (1) therapy modification due to resistance/perceived treatment failure, (2) increased/unchanged qSOFA, or (3) persistent fever 48 h after initiating appropriate therapy. Secondary outcomes included rate of infectious diseases consultation, all-cause inpatient mortality, mechanical ventilation requirement, and infection-related intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay. states, and patient-specific factors should be assessed when considering empiric antipseudomonal dosing.Malignant ascites (MA) and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) are frequently developed in patients with metastatic cancer; however, the biological properties of these fluids have not been clarified. The present study explored the biological role of a low molecular fraction derived from malignant effusions on the activation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and on the proliferation of breast cancer cells and fibroblast 55x cells. A less then 10-kDa fraction from effusions of 41 oncological patients and 34 individuals without cancer was purified, and its potential role in inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) production on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells was explored, as well as its cytotoxicity on MCF-7 breast cancer cells and fibroblast 55x cells. A significant decrease in NO production was observed in the less then 10-kDa fraction from malignant effusions. In addition, the acellular fraction from MA decreased the viability of breast cancer cells without affecting human fibroblasts.
