Chronology
Ernest Cole was one of South Africa’s first black independent photographers whose early images, shocking at the time of their first publication, revealed to the world the lives of black people under apartheid. Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and lived in exile in the United States, where he photographed extensively in New York City and across the United States.
