Chronology
CIA agent Joe tries to balance his private and professional life as the spearhead of the CIA’s war on terror. Real military advisors helped make the weapons handling, house cleaning, deployment, squad activities, etc. more authentic. Sheridan knows how to take us into testosterone-soaked, macho worlds without clichés and seemingly without intention. It is what it is.
No apologies necessary
His characters are always grounded and he is extremely skilled at casting them. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The script has to be as good, if not better, than the men’s. Guys are easy. Women are smarter and more complex.
They are strong and compelling
Beth in Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel riders, the lonely ranch hand (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) – all great female characters who fit into the world of the story in a natural and easy way. Not just “the sidekick of…” or T&A. He upped his game with the excellent character of Faith Hill, played devastatingly in “1883,” followed by Dame Mirren in the flop “1923.” Now we have Zoe Saldana delivering some of the best work of her career. I absolutely approve of her playing the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch). I appreciate De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who won’t give up, and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her beat up a male comrade with 200 pounds of extra muscle.
Reality comes first!
I find her character much more interesting when she’s someone who needs to be knocked out or just knocked to the ground before she gives up. Are we talking about Jill Wagner now, or should I mention her hair? What a turnaround! From schmaltzy Hallmark trash to super cool special forces? I’ll buy that.
Special mention: Mrs
Lanier as the evil teenage daughter. I’m eagerly awaiting the story arc created for this loose canon, as long as they continue to avoid the teen angst cliché. Good actor, could be interesting…
