Prey diversity and human activities can reinforce niche segregation by increasing resource heterogeneity. Here, we explored trophic and spatial sexual segregation in the only avian scavenger that exhibits pronounced sexual size dimorphism (up to 50% difference in body mass) and a highly despotic social system, the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus). We predicted that larger and dominant males would exclude smaller and subordinate females from high-quality resources, leading to sexual segregation particularly in human-dominated landscapes showing increased prey diversity. We compared resource use between females and males across six sites in Argentina featuring a range of prey diversity via stable isotopes analysis of molted feathers (n = 141 individuals). We then focused on two sites featuring contrasting levels of prey diversity and quantified assimilated diet via stable isotopes and space use via GPS monitoring (n = 23 and 12 tagged individuals). We found no clear differences in isotopic niche space, individual variation in isotopic signature, or assimilated diet between females and males. However, there were differences in foraging locations between sexes, with females apparently using areas of fewer food resources more frequently than males. Local conditions defined the dynamics of fine-scale sexual differences in foraging sites; yet, unpredictable and ephemeral carrion resources likely prevent segregation by sexes at the landscape scale. Our study highlights complex dynamics of sexual segregation in vultures and the relevancy of analyses under multiple spatial-temporal scales to explore segregation in social species.In vitro cultured plant cells, in particular the tobacco BY-2 cell, have demonstrated their potential to provide a promising bioproduction platform for therapeutic proteins by integrating the merits of whole-plant cultivation systems with those of microbial and mammalian cell cultures. Over the past three decades, substantial progress has been made in improving the plant cell culture system, resulting in a few commercial success cases, such as taliglucerase alfa (Elelyso®), the first FDA-approved recombinant pharmaceutical protein derived from plant cells. However, compared to the major expression hosts (bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells), plant cells are still largely underutilized, mainly due to low productivity and non-human glycosylation. Modern molecular biology tools, in particular RNAi and the latest genome editing technology CRISPR/Cas9, have been used to modulate the genome of plant cells to create new cell lines that exhibit desired “traits” for producing therapeutic proteins. This review highlights the recent advances in cellular engineering of plant cells towards improved recombinant protein production, including creating cell lines with deficient protease levels or humanized glycosylation, and considers potential development in the future.

    Comparative transcriptome analyses accompanied by biochemical assays revealed high variability in heat stress response in Cajanus species. Among the studied species, C. scarabaeoides was the most thermotolerant followed by C. cajanifolius, C. cajan, and C. acutifolius. Pigeonpea is one of the climate-resilient grain legumes. Though the optimum temperature for cultivated pigeonpea is ~ 25-35°C, its wild relatives grow in temperatures ranging between 18 and 45°C. To gain insight into molecular mechanisms responsible for the heat stress tolerance in pigeonpea, we conducted time-series transcriptome analysis of one pigeonpea cultivar (Cajanus cajan) and two wild relatives, Cajanus acutifolius, and Cajanus scarabaeoides subjected to heat stress at 42 ± 2ºC for 30min and 3h. A total of 9521, 12,447, and 5282 identified transcripts were differentially expressed in C. cajan, C. acutifolius, and C. scarabaeoides, respectively. In this study, we observed that a significant number of genes undergo alternative splicinge identification of candidate genes, which can be useful for the development of thermo-tolerant pigeonpea cultivars.

    Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are highly effective in several cancer entities, but also invoke a variety of immune-related adverse events (irAE). These are mostly reversible, but can be life-threatening or even fatal. Epigenetics chemical Currently, the pathogenesis is not fully understood, but crucial for effective treatment. Prediction and early detection of irAE could be facilitated and treatment optimized if relevant biomarkers and effector mechanisms were better characterized.

    This study included a total of 45 irAE in patients with metastatic melanoma who were treated with ICI. All patients underwent a complete work-up with exclusion of other causes. Longitudinal blood samples were analyzed for a panel of soluble markers and compared to baseline and to patients who did not experience any irAE. Measurements included LDH, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, IL-17, C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha as well as tumor markers S100 and melanoma inhibitory activity (MIA).

    During the early onset of irAE increases in serum IL-6 (from mean 24.4pg/ml at baseline to 51.0pg/ml; p = 0.003) and CRP (from mean 7.0mg/l at baseline to 17.7mg/l; p = 0.001) and a decrease in MIA (from mean 5.4pg/ml at baseline to 4.8pg/ml; p = 0.035) were detected. No changes in IL-17 were noted. These effects were observed for irAE of different organ systems.
