Capitalizing on the geo-temporal variation in social policies and economic environments across Canadian provinces between 2005 and 2018, we examined the association between provincial policies and economic environments and likelihood of experiencing food insecurity among households with children. Drawn from 13 years of the Canadian Community Health Survey, our sample comprised 123,300 households with below-median income with children under 18 in the ten provinces. We applied generalized ordered logit models on the overall sample and subsamples stratified by Low-Income Measure (LIM). Higher minimum wage, lower income tax, and lower unemployment rate were associated with lower odds of food insecurity in the overall sample. A hypothetical one-dollar increase in minimum wage was associated with 0.8 to 1.0-percentage-point decrease in probability of food insecurity. The probability of food security increased by 1.2 to 1.6 percentage points following a one-percentage-point drop in bottom-bracket income tax rate. One-percentage-point lower unemployment rate corresponded to 0.6 to 0.8-percentage-point higher probability of food security. Higher welfare income and lower housing price predicted lower likelihood of severe food insecurity in the below-LIM subsample. Higher sales tax and median wage predicted higher likelihood of food insecurity among above-LIM households. Income support policies, favorable labor market conditions, and affordable living costs were all related to reduced food insecurity among Canadian households with children. Policies that increase minimum wage, reduce taxes, and create jobs may help alleviate food insecurity.Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been definitively linked with cross-domain life course well-being. While scales measuring the ten “Conventional” ACEs (ACEs-C; intrafamilial experiences of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction) are parsimonious, use of such scales alone may fail to capture crucial information about adversity, particularly in youth growing up in underresourced areas. Patterns and disparities in Conventional and Expanded ACEs (ACEs-E; experiences more common in impoverished and densely populated areas) were examined in the large, primarily Black Chicago Longitudinal Study cohort. This cohort has been followed from the 1980s to the present. Participants in the present study, comprising over 70% of the original sample, responded to a follow-up survey between 2012 and 2017. ACE information was collected both prospectively and retrospectively. Overall ACE prevalence and differences in ACEs by sex and risk were explored using logistic regression with adjusted and unadjusted odds ratios, and chi-squared tests. Higher sociodemographic risk in early childhood was associated with higher rates of ACEs-C through adolescence. Males endorsed higher rates of ACEs-E, particularly relating to violent crime. Nearly 1/5 of participants reported only ACEs-E, which are often not measured when assessing ACEs. To evaluate the mean aortic-right atrial pressure (AoP-RAP) gradients and mean coronary perfusion pressures (CPPs) observed during open cardiac massage (OCM) versus those obtained with selective aortic arch perfusion (SAAP) in post-mortem hypovolemic swine.
Post-mortum, male swine, utilized in prior studies of hemorrhage, were included in the study. Animals were bled ∼25-50% of circulating volume prior to death. Animals either underwent clamshell thoracotomy and OCM immediately after death was confirmed (n = 6) or underwent SAAP within 5-15 min of death (n = 6). Aortic root and right atrial pressures were recorded continuously during each method of resuscitation using solid state blood pressure catheters. Representative five beat samples were extracted; short, similarly timed segments of SAAP were also extracted. Mean AoP-RAP gradient and CPPs were calculated and compared.
Mean AoP-RAP gradient and CPP were significantly higher in SAAP animals compared to OCM animals (mean ± SD; 29.1 ± 8.4 vs. 24.5 ± 5.0, p < 0.001; 28.9 ± 8.5 vs. 9.9 ± 6.0, p < 0.001). Mean CPP was not significantly different from mean AoP-RAP gradient in SAAP animals (p = 0.92); mean CPP was significantly lower than mean AoP-RAP gradient in OCM animals (p < 0.001). While 97% of SAAP segments had a CPP > 15 mmHg, only 17% of OCM segments had a CPP > 15 mmHg (p < 0.001).

However, despite their promise, further clinical translation of this innovative technology can be hindered by immunological off-target effects. All human cells are equipped with an arsenal of receptors that recognize molecular patterns specific to foreign nucleic acids and understanding the rules that guide this recognition offer the key rationale for the development of therapeutic NANPs with tunable immune stimulation. Numerous recent studies have provided increasing evidence that in addition to NANPs’ physicochemical properties and therapeutic effects, their interactions with cells of the immune system can be regulated through multiple independently programmable architectural parameters. The results further suggest that defined immunomodulation by NANPs can either support their immunoquiescent delivery or be used for conditional stimulation of beneficial immunological responses.
