Traditionally, beers are made with gluten-containing cereals. It is crucial to have rapid analytical methodologies that allow gluten content control of the beers for celiac consumers. We assess the content of gluten in 65 conventional and 41 gluten-free labeled beers commercialized in Europe and compare the results in a subgroup of 71 beers with three ELISA kits. This research allows gathering information on the potential complementary utility of NIR analysis applied to gluten analysis of gluten-free beers in terms of time saving. Results obtained with the ELISA technique identified competitive R5 to be the most sensitive in detecting the prolamins, by eliciting a higher number of beers containing gluten above 20 mg/kg. The gluten content in conventional beers tested increased with the presence of wheat as raw material and with the use of ale-type yeasts. By using competitive R5, 3 out of the 41 gluten-free labeled beers appeared to contain gluten above 20 mg/kg, and conversely, 15 out of 65 of the conventional beers showed a gluten content below this threshold. According to our approaches, NIR did not achieve a suitable correlation with ELISA results, neither for gluten quantification nor for discrimination, and therefore, it cannot be proposed as a complementary technique.The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether the blockade of the interaction between the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (NF-ĸB) ligand (RANKL) and its receptor RANK as well as the blockade of NF-κB inhibitor kinase (IKK) and of NF-κB translocation have the potential to suppress the pathogenesis of allergic asthma by inhibition and/or enhancement of the production by CD4+ and CD8+ T cells of important cytokines promoting (i.e., IL-4 and IL-17) and/or inhibiting (i.e., IL-10 and TGF-β), respectively, the development of allergic asthma. Studies using ovalbumin(OVA)-immunized mice have demonstrated that all the tested therapeutic strategies prevented the OVA-induced increase in the absolute number of IL-4- and IL-17-producing CD4+ T cells (i.e., Th2 and Th17 cells, respectively) indirectly, i.e., through the inhibition of the clonal expansion of these cells in the mediastinal lymph nodes. Additionally, the blockade of NF-κB translocation and RANKL/RANK interaction, but not IKK, prevented the OVA-induced increase in the percentage of IL-4-, IL-10- and IL-17-producing CD4+ T cells. These latter results strongly suggest that both therapeutic strategies can directly decrease IL-4 and IL-17 production by Th2 and Th17 cells, respectively. This action may constitute an important mechanism underlying the anti-asthmatic effect induced by the blockade of NF-κB translocation and of RANKL/RANK interaction. Thus, in this context, both these therapeutic strategies seem to have an advantage over the blockade of IKK. None of the tested therapeutic strategies increased both the absolute number and frequency of IL-10- and TGF-β-producing Treg cells, and hence they lacked the potential to inhibit the development of the disease via this mechanism.
A poor body composition, often found in elderly patients, negatively impacts perioperative outcomes. We evaluated the effect of a perioperative nutritional protocol (NutriCatt) on body composition and clinical outcomes in a cohort of elderly patients undergoing colorectal surgery in a high-volume center adopting the ERAS program.
302 out of 332 elderly (>75 years) patients from 2015 to 2020 were identified. Patients were divided according to their adherence, into “NutriCatt + ERAS” (
= 166) or “standard ERAS” patients (
= 136). Anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance analysis data were evaluated for NutriCatt + ERAS patients. Complications, length of hospital stay (LOS), and other postoperative outcomes were compared between both groups.
In NutriCatt + ERAS patients, significant improvements of phase angle (pre-admission vs. admission 4.61 ± 0.79 vs. 4.84 ± 0.85;
= 0.001; pre-admission vs. discharge 4.61 ± 0.79 vs. 5.85 ± 0.73;
= 0.0002) and body cell mass (pre-admission vs. admission 22.4 ± 5.6 vs. 23.2 ± 5.7;
= 0.03; pre-admission vs. discharge 22.4 ± 5.6 vs. 23.1 ± 5.8;
= 0.02) were shown. NutriCatt + ERAS patients reported reduced LOS (
= 0.03) and severe complications (
= 0.03) compared to standard ERAS patients. A regression analysis confirmed the protective effect of the NutriCatt protocol on severe complications (OR 0.10, 95% CI 0.01-0.56;
= 0.009).
The NutriCatt protocol improves clinical outcomes in elderly patients and should be recommended in ERAS colorectal surgery.

The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of this measure on the health and comfort of university students and the role that the characteristics of the home may have played. It is essential to differentiate between the terms comfort and health both from the medical and architectural perspectives, as there are differences between the two concepts that are, nonetheless, shared by both disciplines. An online survey was fulfilled by 188 medicine and architecture undergraduate students at the University of Seville, Spain. selleck kinase inhibitor In terms of health, 89% suffered neuropsychiatric disorders (56% anxiety and 49% depression), 38% gained weight and 59% reported alcohol consumption. In relation to comfort, the majority rated their home positively, comfortable in terms of room temperature and noise at night, and they had a good relationship with cohabitants. However, those who did not have a balcony or terrace would have liked to have open spaces They would have also liked to increase the size of their bedroom, where they spent most of their time and where they studied. A built-up environment gave them a sense of being imprisoned, while those who enjoyed open spaces found a sense of peace. The absence of open spaces in the house, the environment and the impossibility of making the most frequently used spaces more flexible may have had negative impacts on the health and comfort of university students during confinement.
