Aim of present study is to compare audiological and surgical outcomes in prelingual deaf children with Mondini’s dysplasia (MD) and those with normal inner ear anatomy.

Retrospective data was collected from Jan 2008 to Dec 2016. Children with bony IEM other than MD, syndromic association, multiple disabilities, those lost to follow up, and perilingual or postlingual deafness were excluded from study. Audiological outcomes for auditory perception (CAP score) and speech intelligibility (SIR score) was noted for a follow up period of 1 year.

Mean age at implantation was 2.8 years (Range of 2 to 6 years). 2 patients had intraoperative CSF ooze which was controlled intraoperatively by conservative measures. Post operative facial nerve function was normal in all patients. None of the patient in either group had any complications at one year of follow up period. There was statistically significant improvement in CAP – SIR score in Group A at 6 – 12 months compared to pretreatment. There was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in terms of CAP – SIR score at 6 – 12 months.

The study stresses the fact that cochlear implantation can be safely performed in children with MD although there is a risk of intraoperative CSF leak which can be controlled intraoperatively. Cochlear implantation in children with MD has good surgical, auditory and speech outcomes at par with children with normal bony inner ear anatomy.

This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between tinnitus parameters (duration, severity, reaction, handicap levels) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain values in patients with tinnitus with normal hearing without vertigo or any other complaints and to compare the VOR gains with a healthy group.

The study group consisted of 30 individuals aged between 18 and 65 years who suffered from tinnitus but not from hearing loss and vertigo. The control group also consisted of 30 individuals who were categorized as healthy adults. The tinnitus handicap inventory, tinnitus reaction questionnaire, and tinnitus handicap questionnaire were applied to each individual in the tinnitus group, and the video head impulse test (VHIT) was conducted in 2 groups.

Statistically, a significant difference was found between the 2 groups in terms of VOR gain values in horizontal and vertical semicircular canal planes (p<0.05). However, there was no statistically significant correlation between tinnitus parameters, age, and VOR gain values in the study group (p>0.05).

Considering the lower VOR gain values of the study group than the control group, these patients may need to be followed up for vestibular dysfunction associated with tinnitus, which can be a symptom of peripheral vestibular disorder. Moreover, this study will contribute to the literature because we determined a high-frequency component of VOR by VHIT, which was used to evaluate the relationship between tinnitus parameters and peripheral vestibular function.

Wideband tympanometry (WBT) measurements show sensitivity to trends in external ear canal/middle ear maturation and changes in middle ear status as a result of different types of dysfunction. This study aims to determine the effects of cochlear implantation (CI) on middle ear status.

This is a prospective comparative clinical study that has been done in a tertiary referral center. The patients who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation were included in the study. All the participants were under 18 years of age and had congenital bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). WBT measurements of implanted ears were calculated and compared to those of non-implanted ears (control group) in the same patient group. The differences in these measurements were subjected to statistical analyses.

A total of 48 patients (96 ears) who underwent unilateral CI were included in the study. Our study revealed that significant reductions in the average absorbance ratios occurred at all measured frequencies andws that the average absorbance ratio decreases and average resonance frequency increases after cochlear implantation. These findings may be related to increased stiffness in middle and inner ear system. Future studies are needed for more detailed information and recommendations on this topic.Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause damage to DNA and proteins. Here, we report that the RecA recombinase is itself oxidized by ROS. Genetic and biochemical analyses revealed that oxidation of RecA altered its DNA repair and DNA recombination activities. Mass spectrometry analysis showed that exposure to ROS converted four out of nine Met residues of RecA to methionine sulfoxide. Mimicking oxidation of Met35 by changing it for Gln caused complete loss of function, whereas mimicking oxidation of Met164 resulted in constitutive SOS activation and loss of recombination activity. Yet, all ROS-induced alterations of RecA activity were suppressed by methionine sulfoxide reductases MsrA and MsrB. These findings indicate that under oxidative stress MsrA/B is needed for RecA homeostasis control. The implication is that, besides damaging DNA structure directly, ROS prevent repair of DNA damage by hampering RecA activity.
