Such participant characteristics had greater explanatory power than the experimental manipulations.
Subtle differences in how information is presented may influence critical decisions. However, even among women with the same values, diversity in treatment choice remains.

Bio-electrochemical systems are efficient to promote electrons transfer between microbes and pollutants to improve the degradation of refractory contaminants. In particular, three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors (3DBERs), integrating the biofilm with particle electrodes, represent a novel bio-electrochemical technology with superior treatment performances. In this study, the electroactive biofilm is cultured and acclimated on two types of particle electrodes, granular activated carbon (GAC) and granular zeolite (GZ), to degrade the target pollutant TBBPA in 3DBERs. Compared to GZ, GAC materials are more favorable for biofilm formation in terms of high specific surface area and good conductivity. The genus of Thauera is efficiently enriched on both GAC and GZ particles, whose growth is promoted by the electricity. By applying 5 V voltage, TBBPA can be removed by over 95% in 120 min whether packing GAC or GZ particle electrodes in 3DBERs. The synergy of electricity and biofilm in TBBPA degradation was more significant in GAC packed 3DBER, because the improved microbial activity by electrical stimulation accelerates debromination rate and hence the decomposition of TBBPA. Applying electricity also promotes TBBPA degradation in GZ packed 3DBER mainly due to the enhanced electrochemical effects. Roles of particle electrode materials in TBBPA removal are distinguished in this work, bringing new insights into refractory wastewater treatment by 3DBERs.We assessed the relation between COVID-19 waves in Italy, which was severely affected during the pandemic. We evaluated the hypothesis that a larger impact from the first wave (February-May 2020) predicts a smaller peak during the second wave (September-October 2020), in the absence of local changes in public health interventions and area-specific differences in time trends of environmental parameters. Based on publicly available data on province-specific SARS-CoV-2 infections and both crude and multivariable cubic spline regression models, we found that for provinces with the lowest incidence rates in the first wave, the incidence in the second wave increased roughly in proportion with the incidence in the first wave until an incidence of about 500-600 cases/100,000 in the first wave. Above that value, provinces with higher incidences in the first wave experienced lower incidences in the second wave. It appears that a comparatively high cumulative incidence of infection, even if far below theoretical thresholds required for herd immunity, may provide noticeable protection during the second wave. We speculate that, if real, the mechanism for this pattern could be depletion of most susceptible individuals and of superspreaders in the first wave. TAK-901 price A population learning effect regarding cautious behavior could have also contributed. Since no area-specific variation of the national policy against the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak was allowed until early November 2020, neither individual behaviors nor established or purported environmental risk factors of COVID-19, such as air pollution and meteorological factors, are likely to have confounded the inverse trends we observed in infection incidence over time. The toxicity of surfactants, which are an integral component of glyphosate-formulated products is an underexplored and highly debated subject. Since biomonitoring human exposure to glyphosate co-formulants is considered as a public health priority, we developed and validated a high-resolution mass spectrometry method to measure the urinary excretion of surfactants present in Roundup MON 52276, the European Union (EU) representative formulation of glyphosate-based herbicides. Quantification was performed measuring the 5 most abundant compounds in the mixture. We validated the method and showed that it is highly accurate, precise and reproducible with a limit of detection of 0.0004 μg/mL. We used this method to estimate the oral absorption of MON 52276 surfactants in Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to three concentrations of MON 52276 via drinking water for 90 days. MON 52276 surfactants were readily detected in urine of rats administered with this commercial Roundup formulation starting from a low concentration corresponding to the EU glyphosate acceptable daily intake. Our results provide a first step towards the implementation of surfactant co-formulant biomonitoring in human populations.Tetracycline has been frequently detected in municipal wastewater due to its extended use for various purposes. This study investigated the influence of tetracycline on non-aerated microalgal-bacterial granular sludge cultivated for municipal wastewater treatment. It was found that ammonia-N removal rate decreased at the tetracycline concentrations of 1 and 10 mg/L. A mass balance on nitrogen further revealed that the observed ammonia-N removal could be mainly attributed to microalgal assimilation which was inhibited by tetracycline at the concentrations studied. In fact, reduced production of chlorophyll in microalgae was observed in the presence of tetracycline, leading to decreased ammonia-N removal rate. Meanwhile, decreased dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at high tetracycline concentration also indicated inhibition of microalgae. Furthermore, the relative abundances of microalgae containing green algae and cyanobacteria were inhibited by tetracycline. The results gathered in this study indicated the tetracycline-induced decoupling of symbiosis in microalgal-bacterial granular sludge. It is expected that this study can shed lights on the behaviors of non-aerated microalgal-bacterial granules in response to the presence of tetracycline during municipal wastewater treatment.
