Little information is available about the etiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, and epidemiologic features of Bone Tuberculosis (Bone-TB). In this work, we present the epidemiological data about the Bone-TB in the Sultanate of Oman.
Retrospectively, we identified and assessed those patients who were diagnosed with Bone-TB between January 2002 and December 2019 at Khoula Hospital. The following data were collected demographics, clinical presentation, anatomical location, diagnosis, and treatment of the Bone-TB.
During the study period, 115 cases of Bone-TB were diagnosed. Males were affected more than females (57.4% and 42.6%, respectively). About 30% of Bone-TB cases were primary diagnosed in other organs particularly the lungs and then after disseminated to the bone. However, the Bone-TB was detected in hip, leg, hand, shoulder, and skull bones, the most detected Bone-TB was in spine (66% of cases). After vaccination the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) strains were identified in the bones of eight babies. Tubercle bacilli were detected by Acid-Fast Stain (AFS) in 59% of cases, and the rest of cases were confirmed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. There are two used treatment regimens, with 12.4% relapse. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disturbances were the most related side effects. The resistance has been detected to pyrazinamide in six cases, rifampicin in three cases, and isoniazid, streptomycin and kanamycin were detected in one case.

The death was predominant among skull-TB cases.In this investigation, the fermentation step of a standard mammalian cell-based industrial bioprocess for the production of a therapeutic protein was studied, with particular emphasis on the evolution of cell viability. This parameter constitutes one of the critical variables for bioprocess monitoring since it can affect downstream operations and the quality of the final product. In addition, when the cells experiment an unpredictable drop in viability, the assessment of this variable through classic off-line methods may not provide information sufficiently in advance to take corrective actions. In this context, Process Analytical Technology (PAT) framework aims to develop novel strategies for more efficient monitoring of critical variables, in order to improve the bioprocess performance. Thus, in this work, a set of chemometric tools were integrated to establish a PAT strategy to monitor cell viability, based on fluorescence multiway data obtained from fermentation samples of a particular bioprocess, in two different scales of operation. The spectral information, together with data regarding process variables, was integrated through chemometric exploratory tools to characterize the bioprocess and stablish novel criteria for the monitoring of cell viability. These findings motivated the development of a multivariate classification model, aiming to obtain predictive tools for the monitoring of future lots of the same bioprocess. The model could be satisfactorily fitted, showing the non-error rate of prediction of 100%.
Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is one of destructive plant viruses, causing serious economic losses in the world. Using antiviral proteins or elicitors to inhibit viral infection or promote plant immunity is one of the efficient strategies against TMV. Our previous study identified that the fermentation broth of Brevibacillus laterosporus strain B8 showed strong antiviral activity against TMV. Here, BLB8 (B. laterosporus strain B8 protein, BLB8), an antiviral protein from B. laterosporus strain B8 was isolated and characterized. BLB8 showed protective, inactive and curative effects against TMV, and the inhibition rate reached up to 63%, 83% and 55%, respectively. BLB8 infiltrated around the infection site of the recombinant virus TMV-GFP inhibited the systemic extend and movement of TMV. Pretreatment of the bottom leaves with BLB8 inhibited the spread and accumulation of TMV in upper systemic leaves. Although more than 100 cases have been reported in the literature, a comprehensive review has not been performed nor have clinical guidelines been established. Therefore, we describe the clinical features of 16 additional patients, review features of previously reported individuals, and suggest clinical guidelines. Our findings expand the clinical phenotype of T9M, including novel features of amblyopia, astigmatism, corectopia of pupil, posterior embryotoxon, and diaphragmatic eventration. Most patients had prenatal and perinatal issues, particularly from respiratory, growth, and feeding standpoints. Although small birth parameters were common, long-term growth trends varied widely. An association with advanced parental ages was also identified. The spectrum of growth and development was wide, ranging from nonverbal patients to those able to participate in educational programs with age-appropriate peers.
