Energy crises and environmental pollution are two serious threats to modern society. To overcome these problems, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets were fabricated and functionalized with SnO2 nanoparticles to produce H2 from water splitting and degrade 2-chlorophenol under visible light irradiation. Gossypol concentration The fabricated samples showed enhanced photocatalytic activities for both H2 evolution and pollutant degradation as compared to bare g-C3N4 and SnO2. These enhanced photoactivities are attributed to the fast charge separation as the excited electrons transfer from g-C3N4 to the conduction band of SnO2. This enhanced charge separation has been confirmed by the photoluminescence spectra, steady state surface photovoltage spectroscopic measurement, and formed hydroxyl radicals. It is believed that this work will provide a feasible route to synthesize photocatalysts for improved energy production and environmental purification. The aim of the study was to evaluate and correlate most important epidemiological and economic indicators of CRC in 11 selected Balkan countries. The number of new CRC cases was 56,960, and the highest 5-year CRC prevalence was in Slovenia, Croatia, and Greece. Age-standardized CRC incidence rates were highest in Slovenia, Serbia, and Croatia, and age-standardized mortality rates were highest in Croatia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. Current Health Expenditure as % of Gross Domestic Product was the highest in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The GDP per capita levels have shown positive correlation with the CRC incidence rate and prevalence. Absolute numbers of new and death-related CRC cases and 5-year prevalence in absolute numbers have shown strong positive correlation with GDP in million current US$. It has been shown that various economic indicators can be linked to the rate of incidence and prevalence of the CRC patients in the selected Balkan countries. Therefore, economic factors can influence the epidemiology of CRC, and heavy CRC burden in the Balkan region may be one of the indexes of the economic development. Leishmania infantum and Leishmania donovani, which are important causes of visceral leishmaniasis, have also occasionally been reported in CL patients. The present study investigates the current distribution of causative species of CL in Iran and neighboring countries in the Middle East. There has been expansion of L. tropica into new urban and rural foci in Iran, with well-documented cases of visceralization, a substantial increase of CL in Syria, and the emergence of new foci and outbreaks in Turkey and Iraq, especially due to L. major. Civil war in Syria and Iraq, population movement, poverty, and climatic change play important roles in the changing CL distribution in this region. Control programs should adopt a multidisciplinary approach based on active surveillance and case finding, especially in vulnerable refugee populations, determination of hazard maps for CL hot points using GIS and other advanced technology, the free distribution of drugs, rodent control, and greater community engagement in poor and marginalized populations. Comprehensive molecular studies that could show the species and strains of Leishmania in different areas of each country can give a better view from the distribution of CL in this region. Administration of burosumab has shown promising results in clinical trial but studies assessing its effect in the everyday practice are missing. With this aim, we analyzed the response to one-year treatment with burosumab, injected subcutaneously at 0.8 mg/kg every 2 weeks, in five children (three females) aged from 6 to 16 years, with genetically confirmed XLH. Patients were being treated with phosphate and vitamin D analogs until the beginning of burosumab treatment. In all children, burosumab administration led to normalization of serum phosphate in association with marked increase of tubular reabsorption of phosphate and reduction of elevated serum alkaline phosphatase levels. Baseline height of patients, from -3.56 to -0.46 SD, increased in the three prepubertal children (+0.84, +0.89, and +0.16 SD) during burosumab treatment. Growth improvement was associated with reduction in body mass index (-1.75, -1.47, and -0.17 SD, respectively), suggesting a salutary effect of burosumab on physical activity and body composition. Burosumab was well-tolerated, mild local pain at the injection site and transient and mild headache following the initial doses of burosumab being the only reported undesirable side effects. No patient exhibited hyperphosphatemia, progression of nephrocalcinosis, worsening of metabolic control or developed hyperparathyroidism. Mild elevation of serum PTH present at the beginning of treatment in one patient 4 was not modified by burosumab administration. These results indicate that in the clinical setting, beyond the strict conditions and follow-up of clinical trials, burosumab treatment for 1 year exerts positive effects in pediatric patients with XLH without major adverse events. Nowadays more attention is paid to the children’s voice in both decision-making on participation and their experience of clinical research procedures. Methods We share our experiences from a long-term, cross-sectional, non-therapeutic follow-up study in the offspring of mothers who participated in scientific research during their pregnancy. Results During the data collection process, different strategies were developed to achieve a satisfactory participation rate with a focus on the involvement of the children. All study documents and measurements were assembled into a superhero framework. This theme is flexible and attracts children of a wide age-span. In order to inform the children before the study visit, a visually attractive assent was created as well as a superhero video. During the study visit, a sticker diploma was used with similar visuals from the assent. The toddlers received a superhero-cape. The children were involved in the decision-making process during the whole process.
