The fifth and final theme focuses on the latest analyses regarding survival in heart transplantation. The themes selected for this 13th special article are only a few of the diverse advances in the specialty during 2020. These highlights will inform the reader of key updates on a variety of topics, leading to improvement of perioperative outcomes for patients with cardiothoracic and vascular disease.

Despite the worldwide implementation of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), there is a lack of consensus guideline on prescription dose. Herein, this multinational study aimed to investigate the effects of the prescribed radiation dose on oncologic outcomes of SBRT for HCC.

The multi-institutional retrospective cohort included 510 patients treated with SBRT between 2010 and 2016. All relevant clinical factors and factors related to SBRT were analyzed to evaluate freedom from local progression (FFLP) and overall survival (OS). Based on a biologically effective dose (BED) cutoff value of 100 Gy, 198 tumors were selected from each group in propensity score matching (PSM).

Baseline characteristics in the BED <100 Gy group were unfavorable (Child-Pugh class B, 19%; advanced stage, 72%; median tumor size was 4 cm) compared with the BED ≥100 Gy group. With a median follow-up of 22 (interquartile range, 9.8-37.6) months, the 2-year FFLP and OS rates were 77% and 73%, respectively. Patients treated with a BED ≥100 Gy showed better rates of 2-year FFLP and OS than patients treated with a BED <100 Gy (FFLP, 89% vs 69%; OS, 80% vs 67%; P < .001). In the multivariable analysis before and after PSM, BED ≥100 Gy was identified as the main prognostic factor for both FFLP and OS (P < .01). Additionally, a dose-response relationship was observed between FFLP and BED (odds ratio, 0.92 per 5 Gy, P = .048).

A BED ≥100 Gy was significantly associated with outcomes, and a dose-response relationship was observed between local tumor progression and BED. Given that SBRT is being increasingly used in HCC, detailed consensus guidelines regarding SBRT dose prescription should be established.

In this study, the extent of transformation of trichlorfon to dichlorvos (DDVP), during the polygalacturonase (PG) treatment of apple pulp was monitored. A transformation pathway is proposed for trichlorfon molecules, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The transformation of trichlorfon involves hydroxyl substitution and cleavage, which was confirmed by molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory. In addition, the toxicity of trichlorfon and its transformed products was analyzed using Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) software. The binding sites of the two pesticides are located in the hydrophobic grooves of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) active site region and both pesticides form hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds with a large number of surrounding amino acid residues. DDVP binds more strongly with AChE, so it is a better AChE inhibitor and more toxic than trichlorfon. The influence of varying frequency modes of a low-power density ultrasound (LPDU) on the enzymolysis efficacy and structural property of corn gluten meal (CGM) was investigated. Sonication pretreatment (of CGM) with sequential and simultaneous duple-frequency modes enhanced notably the relative enzymolysis efficiency, compared to other LPDU frequency modes. With a sequential duple-frequency of 20/40 kHz showing the most significant effect, the maximum value of enzymolysis efficiency and protein dissolution rate were 15.99% and 61.69%, respectively. Y-27632 Changes in the surface hydrophobicity, secondary structure and microstructure revealed alterations of conformation of CGM by ultrasound-induced effect. Furthermore, the molecular weight distribution CGM hydrolysates primarily distributed in 200-500 Da following ultrasonication. Sonication efficaciously enhanced the susceptibility of CGM to alcalase proteolysis. Thus, the use of various LPDU frequency modes in pretreating target proteins (CGM) may be considered as a practical approach to improve protein-enzyme reactions (proteolysis). This study presents the development of an immunochromatographic test system aimed at the detection of chicken additives in meat products. It is based on sandwich-format lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) of immunoglobulins as a biomarker for species identification. The LFIA based on gold nanoparticles as a label for anti-species antibodies was used to determine chicken immunoglobulins and, accordingly, chicken meat in food products. Absence of cross-reactivity with mammalian species tested in the study confirmed high specificity of the determination. The test system showed good sensitivity and rapidity, allowing for the detection of as low as 0.063% (w/w) chicken meat in raw meat mixtures within 20 min. As a result of the testing of raw and cooked meat products, it was shown that the test system can reliably recognize specific immunoglobulins even after heat processing. The proposed assay can be recommended for rapid on-site screening control of the composition and quality of meat products.Curcumin, together with demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin as a whole called curcuminoids, is an active phytochemical constituent present in the turmeric. When it comes to their analysis, most will rely on UV-Visible spectroscopy, HPLC and LC-MS methods. Looking to improve productivity, time and simplicity, we are proposing a 1H NMR based approach for curcuminoids analysis and its applications to different geographical regions. In the present work, sample preparation protocol is reported for the simultaneous determination of curcuminoids using 1H NMR. For the quantification of curcuminoids, 6-7 ppm vinylic proton region in the 1H NMR spectrum was used, where acetone was observed as the suitable solvent in terms of curcuminoids solubility and proper resolution of peak. The result shows that curcumin (46.8-59.50%) was major among all varieties, followed by DMC (22.15-27.70%) and BDMC (17.52-30.29%) except in Andhrapradesh variety, where BDMC (30.29%) was more than DMC (22.89%). These studies were further supported by HPLC analysis.
