Our study shows that the centers linked through telemedicine performed better in terms of patient care and treatment, with a lesser loss to follow-up and lesser deaths in CLHA. We hypothesized that oxidative stress is a potential mediator of acute tubular necrosis in P. falciparum-infected kidneys. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the histopathological changes and markers of oxidative stress in kidney tissues from mice with experimental malaria. DBA/2 mice were divided into two groups the mice in the malaria-infected group (n = 10) were intraperitoneally injected with 1 × 106P. berghei ANKA-infected red blood cells, and the mice in the control group (n = 10) were intraperitoneally injected with a single dose of 0.85% normal saline. Kidney sections were collected and used for histopathological examination and the investigation of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression through immunohistochemistry staining. The histopathology study revealed that the P. berghei-infected kidneys exhibited a greater area of tubular necrosis than those of the control group (p less then 0.05). The positive staining scores for 4-HNE and HO-1 expression in tubular epithelial cells of the P. berghei-infected group were significantly higher than those found for the control group (p less then 0.05). In addition, significant positive correlations were found between the tubular necrosis score and the positive staining scores for 4-HNE and HO-1 in the kidneys from the P. berghei-infected group. In conclusion, this finding demonstrates that increased expression of 4-HNE and HO-1 might be involved in the pathogenesis of acute tubular damage in the kidneys during malaria infection. Our results provide new insights into the pathogenesis of malaria-associated AKI and might provide guidelines for the future development of a therapeutic intervention for malaria.Epigenetic regulation, mainly involving DNA methylation, histone modification, and noncoding RNAs, affects gene expression without modifying the primary DNA sequence and modulates cell fate. Mesenchymal stem cells derived from dental pulp, also called dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), exhibit multipotent differentiation capacity and can promote various biological processes, including odontogenesis, osteogenesis, angiogenesis, myogenesis, and chondrogenesis. Over the past decades, increased attention has been attracted by the use of DPSCs in the field of regenerative medicine. According to a series of studies, epigenetic regulation is essential for DPSCs to differentiate into specialized cells. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms involved in the epigenetic regulation of the fate of DPSCs.Pyrolytic residues of oily sludge are a kind of hazardous solid waste produced by high-temperature pyrolysis of oily sludge, which still contains a certain amount of mineral oil; improper disposal can cause secondary pollution. In order to reutilize the pyrolytic residues of oily sludge, the pyrolytic carbon in pyrolytic residues is recovered by a combination of physical flotation and chemical separation, and they are used for the treatment of oilfield wastewater and adsorption of oil. The results showed that the purity of the pyrolytic carbon is 95.93%; many pores of different sizes are distributed on the surface, with mainly mesoporous distribution. Specific surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter reach 454.47 m2/g, 0.61 cm3/g, and 6.91 nm, respectively. Adsorption effect of pyrolytic carbon on COD and oil in oilfield wastewater is better than that of activated carbon at the same condition. With regard to adsorption on diesel and crude oil, the initial instantaneous adsorption rate of pyrolytic carbon is 3.8 times and 1.86 times faster than that of activated carbon, respectively. When pyrolytic carbon reaches saturated adsorption, cumulative adsorption of activated carbon on diesel and crude oil is much lower than that of pyrolytic carbon.
To find thresholds at which laypersons and dental professionals perceive abnormalities in two facial frontal esthetics variables facial symmetry and vertical harmony.
A baseline frontal image of a young male face with optimum facial proportions was generated from a real image using a photo editing software. Different facial asymmetry images were then generated from this image by manipulating the chin point position at 2 mm increment to the left side. Vertical harmony was perceived through manipulating lower anterior facial height (LAFH) at a ratio of 2% of increased and decreased heights. A total of 120 raters divided equally into four groups of laypersons, general dental practitioners (GDPs), orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFSs) rated these images using an analog scale of 100 mm long. Using ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests at
< 0.05, the image that showed the first statistical difference compared to the baseline was considered as a threshold of abnormality.
The image of 4 mm asymmetry was defined by the laypersons and GDPs as the threshold of abnormality, while the orthodontists and OMFSs realized that at 2 mm. Laypersons and GDPs defined a threshold of 46% as an abnormal decrease in the LAFH and the other 2 groups at 48%. All dental professionals groups rated the image of 54% as an abnormal increase in the LAFH while laypersons perceived that at 56%.
These thresholds regarding frontal esthetics may contribute to the process of establishing proper orthodontic treatment planning that suits the highest facial esthetic standards.
