A family of ranchers in Montana is faced with others encroaching on their land. Forry J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is a seasoned man in the world of rodeo. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to his usual Southern California voice. Featured on WatchMojo: The 10 Best Summer TV Shows You’ve Stopped Watching (2018) (Review of the first two seasons only) I came into this series not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and camera work are excellent. It’s basically mob wars in Montana with regular giant doses of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horses fishing)! Costner is a masterful actor in the role of the Duttons. The show is at its best when it shows the moves of the Duttons and their enemies on the chessboard. The show stalls early in the second season but picks up again halfway through. Kelsey Esbill is the weakest link in the role of Monica and performs poorly, the plot ends awkwardly, and the acting just doesn’t hit the mark. I think Cole Hauser in the role of Rip is probably the strongest actor (excluding Costner himself), and I looked forward to all of the scenes Rip was in. Thomas Rainwater is great too. The plot hums along and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses was a bit rougher and more brutal than the title suggests, this show hits the same note. I highly recommend it and regret not waiting as long to watch it.
